In the understanding of most, vegetarians are people who eat exclusively fruits and vegetables. But it is not so. All of them, of course, have one thing in common — refusal to eat slaughtered meat, poultry, fish and seafood of animal origin. But that's where the similarity ends. Lacto-ovo vegetarians eat eggs, milk, and honey. Lacto-vegetarians — only milk and honey. Ovo vegetarians — eggs and honey. The diet of vegans additionally includes only honey, and even then in exceptional cases. Raw vegetarians eat nothing but raw plant foods — even pickles and preserves. Fruitarians eat in full accordance with their name — fruits and berries.

The motivation for switching to a vegetarian diet is not only taking care of your figure. The reasons may be religious, ethical or environmental. For adherents of Eastern religions, vegetarianism is a tribute to a centuries-old tradition. People who are concerned about environmental issues see livestock as a real threat to the future of the planet, associated with deforestation for pastures and the resulting global consequences. Ethical issues are inextricably linked with our smaller brothers: “For ten years a cow fed you and your children, a sheep dressed and warmed you with its wool. What is their reward for this? Cut throat and eat? (“The Way of Life” by L.N. Tolstoy).

Until recently, the main disadvantage of vegetarianism was the opinion that existed for many years that only animal proteins contain a number of essential amino acids, which the body of a vegan, the most strict branch of vegetarianism, is deprived of. It is now known that the human body is able to synthesize them from vegetable protein, in particular soy, and, provided a well-balanced diet, vegan vegetarianism, which completely excludes animal protein, fully meets modern medical requirements. The Dietetic Associations of America, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, and Germany consider a vegetarian diet to be healthy and complete (as long as it is balanced in micronutrients), suitable for people of all ages, pregnant and lactating women, and athletes. Only a raw food diet causes some experts to be concerned about baby food.
