The Dark Knight is a 2008 American superhero action film directed by Christopher Nolan. The film is the sequel to Batman Begins and the second part of the Batman trilogy.

In the film, Batman (Christian Bale) battles the Joker (Heath Ledger), a criminal insane who seeks to throw Gotham into chaos and destabilize society. The Joker demonstrates his ruthlessness and commitment to anarchy, breaking all rules and laws, even the most cruel ones. Batman tries to stop the Joker and save the city using his powers, his intelligence and his latest technology.

Apart from Bale and Ledger, the film also stars Aaron Eckhart (Harvey Dent), Gary Oldman (James Gordon) and Morgan Freeman (Lucius Fox). The film was highly acclaimed by critics and won numerous awards, including two Oscars. Heath Ledger was awarded a posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the film. The Dark Knight is considered one of the best superhero films and one of the biggest box office hits of all time.
