The Zig programming language is officially leaving GitHub. He is moving his main repository to Codeberg. The reason for this was a decline in the quality of development and an aggressive transition to artificial intelligence tools. This is the most direct attack against Copilot from the developer.
President and lead developer of the Zig Software Foundation, told xrust that the countdown began seven years ago when Microsoft acquired GitHub. He noted that the main problem is outdated priorities and development culture. This has left the platform sluggish and ineffective. And all because of the bloated jаvascript frameworks.
It seems that the turning point for the foundation was the actions of GitHub. After all, the CEO of GitHub once told employees: either you have to embrace AI or you have to quit your job.
The team noticed that GitHub Actions began using something called “vibe-scheduling,” selecting tasks to run seemingly at random. This, combined with other bugs, caused the continuous integration system to become so busy that new commits, even on the master branch, were not checked out.
Rather than spend donations on additional continuous integration hardware to circumvent the crumbling infrastructure, Zig decided to change hosting provider entirely.
Kelly pointed out a long-standing problem with script safe_sleep.sh. This script was implemented in February 2022 to replace the basic POSIX sleep command. The goal was to allow the action executor to safely pause execution. The error in the code was obvious: the script would have used 100% of the CPU and would have executed indefinitely if the task had not checked the time for exactly one second when the loop should have completed.
