The Milan Winter Games torch was lit modestly indoors

The torch of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games was lit last Wednesday. The ceremony took place in Ancient Olympia. Weather conditions forced the action indoors.

The traditional ceremony, writes xrust, is usually held in the stadium where the Games originated in Ancient Greece. Today, actresses act as priestesses. According to legend, the torch was lit with a parabolic mirror. Heavy rain prevented the tradition from being followed.

Therefore, the organizers limited themselves to showing a video of the lighting of the fire during a rehearsal on Monday at the ancient stadium. After the end of the video, the fire was brought into the museum to light the torch.

The first torchbearer to leave the museum was the Greek rower Petros Gaidatzis, and soon he was joined by multiple Olympic champion in ski racing from Italy Stefania Belmondo.

Now the fire will be passed on in a relay race for a whole week to Athens. Then they will take him to Italy. A month-long relay race is also planned there.
