David Amram just celebrated his 95th birthday. He continues to perform. The next event with his jazz quintet will be held at Dizzy’s club in the Jazz Center of Lincoln Center. Last week he gave a master class in Schenectady, New York. He performed his chamber compositions and a jazz group there.
David Amram gave an interview to xrust a few days before his 95th birthday. He remembered his father asking him what he wanted to be when he grew up. His answer was surprising: he would like to live on a farm, be a jazz musician, write classical music and travel the world. It's all done. True, he does not live on a farm.
Amram is a composer, musician, author, conductor and endlessly sociable collaborator. He has happily ignored musical categories since the 1940s. His work includes jazz tunes, symphonies, operas, film scores, theater music, improvised blues and performances at folk festivals, where he typically plays piano, whistle and drums.
