Alexander Ovechkin of the Capitals became the first NHL player to score 900 goals

Alexander Ovechkin scored his 900th career goal last Wednesday in the Washington Capitals' home game against the St. Louis Blues.

Ovechkin increased the league record by scoring 900 goals, writes xrust. He became the first player to score 900 goals. That's how it was — he deflected a miss from teammate Jakob Chychrun and turned and sent the puck back past Blues goalie Jordan Binnington. He lunged, but the puck went wide.

The goal at 2:39 of the second period was Washington's second of the game. Capitals players rushed off the bench to support Ovechkin, their 40-year-old captain.

The scene was reminiscent of April 6, when Ovechkin scored his 895th career goal, beating New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin. Then he surpassed Wayne Gretzky's record of 894 goals.
