"Avatar" - James Cameron reported that the studio was against new sequels

«Avatar» pretty much frayed James Cameron's nerves. He told reporters that he encountered studio resistance when he decided to increase the number of sequels from three to four. And all this after the record-breaking success of the film in 2009.

“Avatar” brought a lot of sorrow to Cameron, writes xrust. He recalls that he assembled a group of writers to begin developing a continuation of the story, spanning three sequels. However, then it turned out that four had to be made.

This came about after the decision to split the original script for Avatar: The Way of Water into The Way of Water and a new third film, Fire and Ash. This decision meant that the planned third Avatar film would now become the fourth, bringing the total number of films in the franchise to five.

This decision was met with serious resistance from the studio. A weighty argument for him was the phrase: wait a minute. What exactly is in question here about your yet another chance to make two billion dollars?

The original Avatar remains the highest-grossing film in history, grossing $2.9 billion. Cameron knew what he was talking about when he made his counterargument against the studio: 2022's The Way of Water grossed $2.3 billion, becoming the third highest-grossing film in history. Now, Fire and Ash is set to cross the $2 billion mark at the global box office this month.

Cameron has previously said that he has already filmed material for Avatar 4, but returning to work on the next sequel and sequel to Avatar 5 will depend on the success of Avatar: Fire and Ash. In an interview with journalists in 2022, the director said that the script for Avatar 4 was the first sequel to Avatar that did not receive a single note from studio executives.
