Windows 11 was updated without a single press release — and this is the case when silence is more important than noise

Microsoft has rolled out build 26100.8968 for Windows 11 24H2 to the Release Preview Channel — without presentations and big words, but with edits that users will feel already on the next loading the system.

There are no new panels or a redesigned interface, writes xrust. But there are things that irritate Windows every day: search that slows down, Explorer that freezes on large folders, a touchpad that confuses touching with scrolling. This is exactly what the update did.

Search finally stops “thinking”

Windows search has been a joke for years — too slow, too unpredictable. In the new build, Microsoft again got into indexing, and this time the result is noticeable: text input is processed faster, especially on laptops, where the system is used to saving processor resources before returning the first matches.

At the same time, we fixed a bug that had been discussed on Reddit for several months: when quickly switching between windows while entering a query, the search could freeze for a couple of seconds — from the outside it looked like a short freeze of the entire system. This behavior is not reproduced in the new build.

The touchpad has become more attentive to gestures

A significant portion of edits went to touch panels. False positives — when Windows mistook a light touch for the start of a scroll — have become fewer, especially on budget and mid-budget laptops with not the most sensitive touchpads.

Another thing is more curious: an experimental gesture for quickly calling up the taskbar was discovered in the assembly. It doesn’t work on all devices yet, but the fact itself is indicative — Microsoft is clearly trying out gesture logic familiar from mobile platforms on the desktop OS.

Voice Access stopped sticking between windows

Voice control before it worked, but with reservations. The main change here is switching between applications: previously Voice Access could continue to “listen” to the previous window and ignore commands for the new one, now the response has become faster.

The second edit is speech recognition in noisy environments. This cannot be called a breakthrough, but the difference is noticeable on laptops without high-quality microphones — and, let’s face it, the majority of them.

Explorer has sped up, the old bug has finally been closed

File Explorer is a regular client of Microsoft patches, and this time it suffered too. Rendering of file lists has been accelerated: large folders, especially those with thousands of objects, open noticeably more cheerfully.

We also closed a long-standing problem: Explorer could freeze when trying to open a directory with a large number of images — complaints about this have been going on since spring.

What else was fixed without fanfare

The list of changes included several items that are unlikely to make it into the headlines, but it is precisely these little things that make up the feeling of a stable system:

• more stable than steel Bluetooth connections for some laptop models;
• fixed a rare bug with incorrect display of battery charge;
• updated system libraries responsible for the background operation of applications;
• compatibility with the new generation of Wi-Fi 7 drivers has been improved.

Widgets also did not go unnoticed: the interface has become more compact — fewer empty zones, more accurate block alignment — and recommendations are now loaded almost instantly instead of the previous pause of a couple of seconds.

Why a “minor” update is not really minor

Microsoft has a habit of showing large features in presentations and building stability in silence. Build 26100.8968 is exactly about this. Search, Explorer, gestures, voice input — these are not spectacular “features” for a slide, but a routine that the user encounters ten times a day. And when this routine goes wrong, irritation accumulates faster than from the absence of any new panel.

It seems that the company is preparing the system for the next wave of more noticeable updates, but in advance it is removing small debris that would otherwise appear in reviews and spoil the impression of the announcement.

To whom the update is already available

Build 26100.8968 is currently only available in the Release Preview Channel — for those who subscribe to the 24H2 branch and participate in the Insider program. Other users will receive changes later, when Microsoft deems the changes sufficiently tested for mass release.
