Canadian director Denis Villeneuve said that he almost took a break before finishing work on Dune: Part Three. This is the final part of his epic sci-fi trilogy, writes xrust. However, he changed his mind — after all, the audience warmly accepted the first two parts.
“I felt an unexpected urge to make a third film,” Villeneuve said Monday in Los Angeles at a preview screening of the film’s trailer, which was unveiled to the public on Tuesday.
The film is distributed by Warner Bros, reminds Reuters. This part will be released in theaters on December 18. The story is based on Dune Messiah, the second book in the Dune series of novels written by Frank Herbert, about the struggle for control of the fictional planet Arrakis. This is a harsh desert area where valuable spices are mined that can prolong life.
The new trailer shows the main character, Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, and Chani, played by Zendaya, years after the events of the first two films, contemplating their future as parents. The first two films, released in 2021 and 2024, grossed a total of $1.1 billion worldwide and won numerous awards, including several Oscars.
Villeneuve describes the third film as a departure from the first two, as Paul Atreides also has to deal with the consequences of the power and influence he wields.
The director recalled how he was haunted every night by visions of the final chapter. “I should have made another film in the meantime, but this image kept coming back. And I said to myself: Okay, let's do it.»
Unexpectedly, Villeneuve invited several actors to the event, including Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Anya Taylor-Joy and Javier Bardem.
Zendaya recalled how she spent her entire 20s working on the Dune films. “They hold a special place in my heart,” the “Euphoria” actress said.
Pattinson, known for his roles in the Batman films and the Twilight series, joins the cast as the antagonist, Scytale. “I just loved those movies—I saw them many times in theaters,” he said.
“He’s a very unusual character in the book,” the actor added. “It’s impossible to say exactly whose side he’s on.” He's not your typical villain — he can even be a good guy. Who knows?
Villeneuve noted that in the final film, fans will find themselves on new planets, on film sets that they have not yet seen.
