“The Last House”: Netflix locked Moura and Lee in their own house

On August 7, Netflix will release “The Last House,” a science-fiction thriller about a family that suddenly finds itself locked within its own walls. The main roles were played by Wagner Moura and Greta Lee, and to transform into survivalists, the actors had to understand the physiology of panic not from books, but with the help of a real survival specialist.

It is curious that the working title of the project for a long time was the dry “11817” — a digital cipher, which the creators preferred to replace with the more telling “Last House” closer to the premiere. Filming started in the spring of last year, so the path from the first firecrackers to the release took more than a year — by the standards of streaming services, this is a rather long period of time.

The actors prepared seriously

Greta Lee, known for the drama “Past Lives,” admitted to Reuters that the most difficult thing was not the physical survival of her heroine, but the emotional breakdown — how a closed space gradually corrodes the relationship between spouses and children. According to her, the team consulted with a real survival specialist to more accurately show what happens to the human body in a stressful situation: how breathing, reaction, and perception of time changes.

Wagner Moura, a Brazilian actor whom viewers remember from Narcos and the Oscar-nominated Secret Agent, responded to the question with humor. When asked how he would cope if he were locked at home, the actor replied that it would be a disaster: he doesn’t know how to fix anything. Lee immediately supported the joke, noting that it would be better for the co-star not to give up his acting career and not try to get into plumbing.

The rest of the cast was also not chosen by chance: the film stars Riley Chang, Emma Ho, Noah Alexander Sosnowski and Gabriel Barbosa — actors playing the younger members of a locked family, as well as Sam Lerner and other supporting performers. Paul Ulvik Rokshet was responsible for the cinematography, the music was written by composer Yair Elazar Glotman — both had previously participated in projects with a pronounced atmosphere of anxiety, which is more a plus than an accident for a claustrophobic thriller.

A genre that never goes out of fashion

“The Last House” continues the line of films about people confined within four walls, from the horror “A Quiet Place” with its sonic hunt to the claustrophobic “Don’t Breathe” and the mystical “Barbarian”. The formula has been working flawlessly for many years now: the less room for maneuver the characters have, the higher the degree of tension for the viewer, and the cheaper the shooting itself costs the production — one location instead of a dozen sets and extras. Netflix is ​​clearly banking on a tried-and-true recipe by adding a fantasy element: an obscure outside threat that keeps a family locked down for reasons not explained until the film's final minutes.

For streaming, such projects are not a one-time experiment, but part of a broader strategy: genre cinema with recognizable faces in the frame consistently keeps subscribers engaged during pauses between the premieres of major blockbusters. Considering that Moura was recently nominated for the main film award of the year, and Lee remains one of the most talked-about actresses after “Past Lives,” the choice of cast looks like a calculated move by producers Chernin Entertainment and 3 Arts Entertainment — and may well pay off with audience interest in the first weeks after release.

How much does it cost to lock stars in a house

The studio traditionally does not disclose the budget of the project, but by the standards of a genre film with one location and a star duo in the lead roles, we are probably talking about an amount of tens of millions of dollars — noticeably more modest than the cost of a typical superhero blockbuster, but the risks for the platform are much lower. That's why Netflix has been methodically ramping up these kinds of mid-budget thrillers over the past couple of years: They're less likely to become headline-grabbing hits, but they consistently generate views and retain subscriptions month after month, without requiring franchise-level advertising budgets, and at the same time pose little risk to the studio's reputation if the critical reception is lukewarm.

What is already known about the reaction

The film's trailer went viral on social media back in June and managed to generate significant discussion: viewers argue about the sound design, which builds up anxiety without a single shot being fired, and how believably the panic of people locked in with no communication with the outside world is shown. Some commentators are already comparing the film to Shyamalan's films — and this is perhaps the best compliment for a psychological thriller on the eve of its premiere.

Russian viewers who are accustomed to keeping up with new Netflix releases via VPN or third-party services should keep in mind: the film will not have an official release in Russia. Nevertheless, the demand for such genre stories among domestic audiences is traditionally high — it’s worth remembering how quickly the service’s previous claustrophobic horror films sold out on pirate platforms.
