A nearby resident told investigators that she woke up to the sound of the collision and called 911. After describing the details of the accident, she said: the car is on fire. She also added that she heard screams about five minutes after her call.

In addition to the driver, there were four other passengers in the car. All five died. The lawsuit was filed by the families of the victims. The plaintiffs allege that Tesla's designers were negligent in designing the vehicle by failing to provide the door handles with power from a battery backup.
