Pavel Durov announced that Telegram has submitted an application to ICANN to register the top-level domain .gram — if the organization approves the request, each user of the messenger will be able to receive a personal web address like username.gram and create their own website literally one text command.
What happened
On August 18, Telegram founder Pavel Durov posted on his X account that the company had officially submitted an application to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to receive the .gram domain zone. This is not about the ordinary registration of one address, but about a claim to manage an entire domain zone — that is, Telegram wants to become the administrator of the top-level domain, as, for example, Google has already done for .app or Amazon for .bot.
If ICANN approves the application, writes xrust, the messenger will have the opportunity to distribute personal second-level domains to more than a billion of its users using the formula “username.gram”. The conditional @durov will be able to receive durov.gram, and the owner of the nickname @monk will receive the monk.gram address, duplicating his identity from the messenger already on the usual web.
Website in one phrase
The key feature of the initiative is not the fact of obtaining a domain, but what stands behind it. According to Durov, at the new addresses, users will be able to deploy interactive sites hosted on Telegram servers, and one text request will be enough to create them — that is, the page can be assembled without a single line of code, simply describing in words what should be on it.
According to foreign media reports familiar with the details of the project, the technical chain looks like this: the user writes in Telegram what exactly he wants to receive on his page; a neural network integrated into the messenger (called the Grok model or another Telegram AI system) generates HTML markup and content; Telegram infrastructure stores and serves this page; and the DNS record on the .gram servers links the user’s personal address with the finished website. For a person, all this looks like sending one message, but in reality the messenger simultaneously acts as a domain registrar, hosting provider and content generator — a combination that no other communication platform has had before.
