Sony stops releasing PlayStation games on PC

Sony Group does not plan to release its major PlayStation 5 games on PC. It's a major strategic shift that sees the video game maker returning to console exclusivity after six years of experimenting with multi-platform releases.

Online games such as Marathon and Marvel Tokon will continue to be released on multiple platforms. However, single-player games such as last year's samurai hit Ghost of Yotei and the upcoming action game Saros will remain exclusive to PlayStation 5, xrust said.

Analysts have already warned that this could change in the future due to the unpredictable nature of the video game industry, and that Sony's plans are constantly changing. But in recent weeks, PlayStation has abandoned plans to release Ghost of Yotei and other first-party games on PC. Two games created by third-party developers but published by PlayStation, Death Stranding 2 and the upcoming Kena: Scars of Kosmora, are still scheduled for release on PC this year.

There are likely several reasons for this shift. One of them is that a number of recent PlayStation games have not sold well on PC. In addition, according to people familiar with Sony's internal policies, some PlayStation employees expressed concern that releasing their games on PC could damage the console's brand and negatively impact sales of the PlayStation 5 and its successors.

For decades, Sony's tactic for selling PlayStation has been to release its most popular franchises exclusively for its consoles. In 2020, the company changed its strategy and began releasing games for personal computers through Steam. Since then, the company has released most of its biggest franchises on PC, such as God of War and The Last of Us.

However, this strategy turned out to be confusing and confused many players. Most PC releases came out months or years after the PlayStation games. The frequency of releases was never consistent, and announcements seemed haphazard. The company also upset PC players by requiring them to create PlayStation Network accounts to access many of its games.

Sony's two competitors in the game console market took different paths. Nintendo has released almost all of its games exclusively for its own Switch console, while Microsoft Corp. has grown into a multi-platform publisher, publishing all PC games and many PlayStation games.

Another factor influencing Sony's decision to change its strategy could be Microsoft's next Xbox console, which is rumored to use Windows and be able to run PC games. Some PlayStation executives may not be thrilled at the prospect of one of the company's flagship games, such as God of War, launching on the next Xbox console.
