In 2026, there is probably no more overrated category of gadgets than smartwatches. Marketing promises: measurement of sleep, stress, pulse, blood oxygen, ECG, body temperature, menstrual cycles, hydration, biological age, glucose levels (coming soon!), cortisol levels (also coming soon!). The buyer sees this list and thinks: “For 30 thousand I will get a personal medical station on my wrist.” Buys. After a month, he stops looking at the indicators — because they are either incomprehensible, inaccurate, or don’t mean anything.
The reality is much more modest. A smart watch is a useful gadget, but it is not a “personal doctor.” Most of the sensors in them provide “average” accuracy, which is suitable for trends over long distances, but not for specific medical decisions. Just because your watch says “stress levels are high” doesn’t mean you need to see a doctor. This means that heart rate variability has dropped. And it can fall for a dozen reasons, most of which are not about stress at all.
What smart watches measure EXACTLY and what approximately
class=»notranslate»>__GTAG5__ On Xrust.ru we compared the readings of popular models with medical devices. The picture is like this:
- Exactly: the number of steps and the distance traveled. Here the physics is simple, the accelerometer works reliably. If the clock says “8,000 steps today,” it is, plus or minus 5%.
- Exactly: resting heart rate. The optical sensor does a good job of counting your heart rate when you are not moving. Perfect accuracy in the morning, immediately after waking up.
- Exactly (with a caveat): ECG function in premium models (Apple Watch Series 9+, Samsung Galaxy Watch 6+). This is medical grade and really catches atrial fibrillation. It does not replace a full examination, but it works as a screening.
- Approximately: heart rate during training. When you move your hand, the optical sensor gets lost. Accuracy drops to ±15-20 hits. If you need an accurate heart rate during training, you need a chest heart rate monitor (Polar H10 for 5,000 rubles).
- Approximately: blood oxygen level (SpO2). The clock measures greatly with an error. If your watch shows 92%, it could be either the real 95% or the real 90%. Not suitable for medical solutions.
- Very approximately: sleep analysis. The watch detects sleep phases based on movements and heart rate. Correlation with real polysomnography is approximately 50-60%. Useful for general trends (“I sleep worse today than yesterday”), not useful for medical conclusions.
- Marketing: “stress level”. This is not a scientific metric at all — it is an interpretation of heart rate variability, which is often incorrect. Ignore or be very skeptical.
- Marketing: “biological age”, “readiness level”, “health index”. Each company invents its own metrics from the same data, and they are not comparable between models. Don't take it seriously.
What's really useful about a smartwatch in 2026? Three things: notifications (don’t take out your phone every 5 minutes), a reminder to move (if you’ve been sitting for more than an hour, get up), motivation (badges for achievements work on the psyche). Everything else is a nice bonus, but not a reason to pay a premium price.
What watch should I buy in 2026? Simple algorithm:
- If in the Apple ecosystem: Apple Watch SE 3 (15-20 thousand) — optimal in terms of price/functions. Series 9+ only if you need an ECG.
- If in Samsung/Android: Galaxy Watch 7 (20-25 thousand). Good integration, full set of functions.
- If the focus is on sports: Garmin (any Forerunner/Fenix line). Industry's best for runners, cyclists, swimmers. Not the most beautiful, but the most accurate in sports.
- If you want a simple fitness tracker: Xiaomi Smart Band 9 (3-4 thousand). 80% of the features of an expensive watch for 1/10 the price. Ideal for those who need “steps + heart rate + notifications”.
And lastly. On Xrust.ru we see a pattern: people who bought a premium watch for 40 thousand stop looking at the indicators after 3-6 months. The watch turns into a beautiful accessory with notifications. If you know that this will be your script, don’t overpay. Xiaomi Smart Band will give you the same feeling and save 35 thousand. If you really plan to track your sports performance and analyze your progress for months, take Garmin or premium Apple. For a specific task. And not “because it’s beautiful.”
