Secret wedding in Tennessee: Candice King and Stephen Kruger got married before the birth of their first child

The stars of the universe of “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals” officially became husband and wife. Candice King and Stephen Kruger exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony with their closest loved ones. Having learned about the imminent addition to the family, the couple decided to abandon the magnificent celebration in favor of a cozy holiday at the “magic hour” of sunset, writes xrust. The couple, expecting their first child, celebrated their love in a private ceremony on February 28 at High Point Farm Chapel in Tennessee.

Although King, 38, and Kruger, 36, originally planned a big wedding in Nashville, they ultimately decided to have a smaller ceremony after learning about King's pregnancy. The result was an intimate ceremony attended by just 15 guests, including King's daughters, Florence and Josephine, with ex-husband and The Fray guitarist Joe King.

«Not having the formalities of a big, well-rehearsed ceremony created such a fun, relaxed atmosphere,» Kruger told the publication. “This did not at all correspond to my ideas about a wedding in my youth. And I think that's what made her so perfect. We could breathe, laugh, cry and focus on each other without worrying about whether everything was going according to plan.»

King added: “Walking down the aisle in that warm glow of the magic hour, it was like we were keeping our little secret. It seemed that the rest of the world was falling into chaos, and this small corner of the world belonged only to us. Time slowed down and became like a love song.”

King admitted that before the ceremony he had some fears

“Surprisingly, there aren’t many wedding dresses on the market that fit well on your belly during pregnancy,” she joked. “I was really worried about how to find a dress that would make me feel like a bride and a mother at the same time, and not like the Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters.

Eventually, a local bridal shop came to the rescue, and King chose a long-sleeve, off-the-shoulder dress that was both «romantic» and «just right on my belly.»

Although King and Kruger became famous for their roles in the same television series, their romantic relationship began only after the completion of both projects.

“We hung around each other for years, since we both lived in Atlanta and worked on the TV series “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals,” the groom told Vogue. “We like to joke that we’ve probably been in the same room twelve times and never noticed each other.”

Everything changed at the cast reunion dinner in 2023, where they finally talked to each other and, as if by magic, felt a spark.

About a year and a half later, Kruger proposed. The engagement announcement came in May 2025, the day after King's 38th birthday. She shared the news in an excited post on Instagram, accompanied by photos of the couple looking into each other's eyes.

King was previously married to musician Joe King. They got married in 2014 and separated in 2022.
