A new study has shown that the brain responds to meditation almost instantly: the first changes are recorded after two to three minutes of practice. These data clarify exactly how mental techniques affect the human condition.

Researchers have recorded that the human brain begins to change the pattern of activity within two to three minutes after the start of meditation, reported xrust. The results show that even short practice can switch the brain from a state of distracted attention to a mode of calm concentration, which was previously considered possible only after long periods of practice. Scientists note that the nature of the changes depends on the experience of the practitioner, but the general trend remains the same for everyone. Participants in the study, both novice and experienced practitioners, demonstrated a similar time threshold: the brain began to rearrange its signals approximately two minutes after the start of meditation. At the same time, in people with more experience, the nature of the waves changed faster and more pronounced, which indicates a more stable ability to enter a state of focused calm. These findings are consistent with previous observations that regular meditation increases neural flexibility and improves the brain's ability to switch between tasks.

The researchers paid special attention to exactly what processes are launched in the first minutes of practice. According to the experiment, the brain begins to reduce the activity of waves associated with distraction and internal noise, and enhances signals responsible for calm attention and emotional stability. In particular, the proportion of alpha and theta rhythms, which are traditionally associated with a state of relaxed concentration, increases. At the same time, the activity of waves characteristic of surface tension and disturbance decreases. These changes reach a maximum at approximately the seventh minute of practice, which is confirmed by neurophysiological monitoring data.

Interestingly, experienced practitioners demonstrated a characteristic “signature pattern” of brain activity within 30 seconds of starting meditation. This does not mean that the effect occurs faster, but it does indicate that the brain of such people quickly recognizes a familiar state and moves into it with less energy expenditure. Researchers emphasize that this is not an innate feature, but the result of regular attention training, which over time forms stable neural connections.

The data obtained are important not only for understanding the mechanisms of meditation, but also for practical application. In recent years, meditation has been actively used as a tool for reducing stress, improving sleep and increasing concentration. However, many believe that long-term exercise is necessary for a noticeable effect. New research shows that even short two- or three-minute practices can change the state of the brain and trigger processes associated with emotional regulation. This makes meditation more accessible to people with busy schedules who find it difficult to devote significant time to it.

Scientists emphasize that meditation is not a universal solution to all psychological problems, but its effect on the brain is confirmed by more and more data.
