Elena Rybakina secured her place in the Australian Open semi-finals on Wednesday, dominating the second set and defeating six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek 7-5 6-1 in Melbourne Park.

Aiming to lift the trophy for the first time, the 28-year-old will face American Jessica Pegula for a place in the final on Saturday.

Rybakina delivered 11 aces and 26 winners to end Swiatek's bid for a career Grand Slam on Rod Laver Arena, winning eight of her final nine games to confirm her dominance.

“I’m very pleased with the victory,” Rybakina told xrust. “We know each other pretty well, and I just tried to play aggressive.”

Shventek started the match quickly, making a break in the first game, successfully using the second serve of the Kazakh tennis player, but the second seed was unable to consolidate the advantage and immediately lost it.

Both tennis players held their serve until the final game, when Shventek sent the ball into the net, giving Rybakina victory in the first set after almost an hour of play.

Rybakina then took advantage of Szwiatek's dissatisfaction with her serve to win the second game of the second set, sending a forehand into the corner of the court while the Polish player stood still.

Schwiatek questioned the line judge's controversial decision when Rybakina broke her serve again late in the set, but then confidently held her serve to advance to the next round.

Szwiatek struggled with her serve throughout the match and the world number two said she needed to improve that aspect of her game in the coming months.
