Russian boxers set their sights on the World Championships in Kazakhstan

The Russian national boxing team has begun preparations for the 2027 World Championships, which will be held in Astana — for the first time in a long time, domestic athletes will be able to enter the ring under their own flag and with the national anthem.

Return to the world stage

The Russian Boxing Federation is preparing a team to participate in the world championship, which will take place in the capital of Kazakhstan at the end of January 2027, writes xrust. This was stated by the chairman of the federation's coaching council, Eduard Kravtsov, in a conversation with TASS. According to him, qualifying competitions will start next year, and the team itself is aimed specifically at the spring tournament in Astana — although, according to the organizers, the championship is scheduled for the period from January 28 to 31.

The decision became possible thanks to several events in recent months. The key thing happened quite recently: the international federation World Boxing officially lifted restrictions on Russian athletes, allowing them to compete in all tournaments under national symbols and in all age categories. The Minister of Sports of Russia and the head of the country's Olympic Committee, Mikhail Degtyarev, announced this in his Telegram channel, calling it the return of Russian boxing to the world stage.

How the boxers received clearance

The path to full participation took longer year. Back in December 2025, the Russian Boxing Federation submitted an application for membership in World Boxing, and in March 2026, the organization’s executive board approved it. Already in April, Russian athletes received the right to compete at international tournaments in a neutral status — without a flag and an anthem. And only now, several months later, all restrictions were lifted completely.

According to Degtyarev, the issue of restoring sports ties was discussed personally with the President of World Boxing Gennady Golovkin, the famous Kazakh boxer who headed the organization in November 2025. The meeting took place in Tashkent in January 2026. The minister emphasized that the decision of this particular federation is especially significant: World Boxing is authorized by the International Olympic Committee to hold a boxing tournament at the Games, which means that full membership opens the way for Russians not only to the world championships, but also to the Olympic cycle — up to the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

Why Astana was chosen

The World Boxing organization has existed for only three years — it was created in April 2023 against the backdrop of the reform of international boxing after the IOC effectively removed the former AIBA federation from managing the Olympic tournament. Kazakhstan has taken a prominent place in this new structure: in addition to the World Boxing Championship, the country will host several more major world championships in 2026–2027 — in wrestling, table tennis, judo, taekwondo and e-sports. For Astana, this is part of a large-scale program to transform itself into one of the sports capitals of the region, and for Russia it is a rare opportunity to return to the number of participants in a tournament of this level in the most comfortable, geographically close conditions.

For Russian boxing, admission is especially important because in recent years the national team has actually dropped out of the official international calendar: athletes were either not allowed at all or competed without the country’s symbols. The return to full status means that results at upcoming tournaments will once again officially count towards the national standings, and the boxers themselves will have a clear Olympic prospect — something the team has been deprived of since the start of the decade.

Now the coaching staff is faced with a practical task — to build a qualifying cycle in such a way as to field a combat-ready squad in Astana by the spring of 2027. The first internal selections, according to Kravtsov, will begin in 2026, and the final list of participants in the World Championship will depend on their results.
