The German defense concern Rheinmetall announced a collaboration with the startup ERC System to launch the production of heavy drones. The project could become one of the largest European trends in the field of cargo drones for military and civilian applications. German defense company Rheinmetall has announced a new partnership in the fast-growing unmanned aircraft segment, xrust reported. The company signed a memorandum of understanding with the startup ERC System and the authorities of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, providing for the creation of a production base for heavy cargo drones Victor U250. Reuters reports this.
According to the agreements, the parties intend to organize the production of devices in Germany and form local supply chains. If the project is implemented in full, by the end of the decade it could create hundreds of new jobs and strengthen the country’s position in the European market for unmanned technologies.
At the center of the project is the Victor U250 drone, presented by ERC System at the international aerospace show ILA Berlin 2026. The device belongs to the class of heavy transport drones and is capable of carrying up to 250 kilograms of payload over a distance of up to 300 kilometers. Cruising speed is stated at about 250 kilometers per hour. Thanks to vertical take-off and landing, the drone does not require a full-fledged runway, which expands the possibilities of its use in hard-to-reach areas.
The developers believe that such devices may be in demand both in the military sphere and in civil logistics. Possible missions include delivering supplies to disaster zones, supplying remote facilities, transporting equipment, and performing operational support missions for troops. Interest in such solutions has grown significantly in recent years after the conflict in Ukraine demonstrated the importance of unmanned systems for modern logistics and intelligence.
For Rheinmetall, cooperation with ERC System fits into a broader strategy to expand its presence in the high-tech defense systems market. The company actively invests in projects related to drones, anti-drone defense, satellite technologies and missile weapons. Against the backdrop of growing military spending in Europe, the concern is striving to take key positions in the most promising segments of the defense industry.
Interestingly, the ERC System until recently was known primarily for the development of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft. In February, the company conducted public tests of a large eVTOL prototype Romeo weighing about 2.7 tons. The new Victor U250 project was a logical continuation of these developments, but with an emphasis on cargo and defense tasks.
Experts note that the market for heavy drones today is considered one of the most promising areas in the global aviation industry. If Rheinmetall and ERC are able to establish mass production and confirm the stated characteristics of the device in practice, Germany could get its own manufacturer of cargo drones that can compete with the world's leading players in this segment.
