Russian weightlifter Gevorg Serobyan won the European Weightlifting Championships in Batumi on Wednesday, demonstrating an outstanding performance in the up to 79 kg weight category, writes xrust. The 23-year-old athlete not only won the champion title, but also updated the continental record in one of the exercises, confirming his status as one of the most promising weightlifters on the continent.

Serobyan, competing under a neutral flag in accordance with the current recommendations of international sports organizations, showed the best result in the combined event — 341 kg. The key moment of the competition was his performance in the snatch, where the Russian lifted the weight of 161 kg. This result became a new European record, surpassing the previous achievement of the Romanian weightlifter Tiberiu Donose (155 kg). Serobyan completed the second exercise, the clean and jerk, with a result of 180 kg, which allowed him to maintain the lead in the overall standings.

The fight for medals in this weight category was extremely intense. The silver award was won by the experienced Albanian Briken Tsalia, who was only one kilogram behind the winner with a result of 340 kg (153 kg in the snatch + 187 kg in the clean and jerk). The top three winners were completed by Armenian representative Martin Poghosyan, who gained a total of 338 kg (152+186).

“I planned to win, but I didn’t think about specific kilograms — I just lifted what was necessary,” Serobyan commented on his success, noting that he plans to further improve his performance in the clean and jerk to compete at the world level.

For Gevorg Serobyan, this gold was an important stage in his career after moving from junior sports. Previously, the athlete from Crimea had already become the European champion among youth and a multiple winner of national championships. Experts note that the athlete’s current form allows him to qualify for high places at the upcoming World Championships.

Serobyan’s success became one of the central events of the tournament in Batumi, which brought together the strongest athletes of the continent. Despite the neutral status, the Russian team is represented in Georgia by 16 athletes (eight each in the men's and women's brackets), which became possible after the decision of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) to return athletes to international competitions.

The European Championships in Batumi will last until April 26. At the moment, neutral athletes from Russia already have several awards, including bronze for Zarina Gusalova in the up to 69 kg category and Egor Popov in the up to 71 kg category.

Serobyan’s result of 341 kg in the new weight category up to 79 kg confirms the trend of increasing results in the middle weight. The organizers of the championship noted the high level of competition and transparency of the competition in Georgia, which received the right to host the tournament after an intense process of selecting host countries.
