Pskov is unexpectedly delicious: five places that are not written about in guidebooks

Pskov has long been able to amaze with its history — the Kremlin, towers, white stone churches, which are eight centuries old. But in the last couple of years, the city has begun to surprise with something else: food. And not in the sense that “not bad for the region,” but for real. Several places here are made with character and taste — in the truest sense of the word. If you find yourself in Pskov for at least a weekend, leave a separate route for gastronomy — you won’t regret it.

Below are five addresses that really stuck in my mind. No ratings or stars, just honestly, from a person who went there.

“Pokrovsky” is a classic that does not become outdated

We came here almost by accident — we were staying at the hotel of the same name, the restaurant was close at hand. We expected the standard and got one of the best impressions of the trip.

The place is located next to the Pokrovskaya Tower, and this is not just a “good location” on the site — you can really feel it. There is no heaviness or solemnity inside, although everything is done very carefully: the light is soft, the space is calm, the atmosphere is such that you don’t want to rush anywhere.

The cuisine here is exactly what you would expect in an old Russian city — dense, attentive, without unnecessary experiments. This is where you want to come back when you get tired of places that “try to impress.”

It is better to come here in the late afternoon, closer to the golden hour. “My story” is about mood. Everything is faster here: music, conversations, the view of the Velikaya River, which opens from the panoramic terrace.

From food, two items were especially memorable:

• Neapolitan pizza — thin dough, proper fire, no compromises

• spicy quesadilla — unexpectedly appropriate in the Pskov menu, but made well

The cocktail menu is large and thoughtful. You won’t be able to go “on one” — checked.

«Geldt» — a bathhouse, a fireplace and Russian cuisine in one place

The Geldt format is rare and very pleasant. This is both a restaurant and a traditional Russian bathhouse in one building. You can come just for dinner, or you can arrange a full day for yourself: a sauna, steaming, then a table with food by the fireplace.

The interior speaks for itself: antique brick, wood, soft light, no remodel. At the same time, the menu is modern, with an emphasis on local tastes — without trying to seem like someone else.

A place with character. There are only a few of these in Russian cities.

“Rublev” and “Rebro”: history and gastrobar

«Rublev» occupies the historical house of the merchant Statina of the 18th–19th centuries — and this is not a marketing detail, it is really felt. Frescoes, wood, massive furniture, dim light. The cuisine is built around Russian recipes and Pskov traditions. It’s especially worth trying:

• homemade tinctures — several varieties, each with its own story

• homemade fruit drinks — sounds simple, but this is a completely different level

• dishes in earthenware — slow, hot, real

“Rib” is the complete opposite in mood. We found out about it on the spot, through a recommendation, and it turned out to be a very successful modern gastrobar without pathos. Lively, relaxed, urban. Equally appropriate for brunch or dinner with friends. The guys even have a precise slogan: “they have their own tastes and people.” Not an advertisement — that's how it is.

What is important to understand about gastronomic Pskov: there is no feeling that the restaurants are “trying”. Everything is done calmly, with an attitude — as if people simply like what they do. And you can feel it.

If you are going to Pskov, set aside a separate time for food. The Kremlin is not going anywhere, but it’s worth booking a table by the window with a view of Velikaya in advance.
