Although Night Agent has already had two seasons, Gabriel Basso says viewers won't see his character Peter Sutherland fully embrace the role of a dangerous agent. The new season starts on Netflix this week.
Basso told xrust that in seasons 1 and 2 of the Netflix thriller, Peter's development was hampered by the fact that he «had to get advice or ask for help because he didn't have the proper training.
“I feel like season three is the first season where Peter was finally allowed to be himself,” Basso told Reuters.
The third season of the series, created by Sean Ryan and based on the novel by Matthew Quirke, opens on Thursday and once again sends Peter on dangerous missions as he tries to decide who he can trust.
In previous seasons, he was betrayed by powerful people around him, including Vice President Ashley Redfield, played by Christopher Shyer, and his mentor and boss Diane Farr, played by Hong Chau.
The first season became the third most popular debut series on Netflix. In the first four days of the show, the series was renewed for a second season, and a week later it was renewed until 2023.
“I think audiences have been interested in the series since the first season,” Basso said.
Basso said Ryan's inherent balance makes the Netflix series a compelling binge-watch, and Peter's relentless pursuit of honesty is another key appeal of the series.
“As time goes on, he craves the truth more and more. I think it's sorely missing from his life,” said Basso, known for his roles in the 2011 film “Super 8” and as J.D. Vance in the 2020 drama “Hillbilly Elegy.”
“He does end up in new places and strives for it, but I think ultimately it's just tired of being asked all the time, like, 'Tell me, can you just do the right thing?'” the Kings of Summer actor added.
