Pepsi Co recalled almost 70,000 bottles of Lipton tea due to a labeling error. A citrus-flavored green tea drink containing 25 grams of sugar per bottle was mistakenly bottled with the label «Diet Berry Flavored Green Tea.» The latter are sugar-free.
Due to a packaging error, individual bottles of Lipton Green Tea Citrus are labeled as Diet Mixed Berry, but they are not sugar-free—they actually contain 25g of sugar, warns xrust.
Sugar errors pose a particular risk for people with diabetes who need to monitor their blood sugar levels. Mislabeled sugar can lead to both hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can quickly become dangerous if left untreated.
PepsiCo began recalling the tea on September 17th. On October 2, the FDA updated the terms of the recall and assigned it the second-highest risk level, Class II. This means that drinking tea may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects. In general, the likelihood of serious adverse health effects is low.
