Paul McCartney has announced his 18th solo album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane — a title referencing the route from Liverpool to the Speke coast, the area where the former Beatle spent his childhood.
In a press release, the 14-track album was called McCartney's most introspective album to date, «a collection of rare and candid fragments of previously unpublished memories, as well as several new ones inspired by love affairs.» songs» allegedly dedicated to McCartney's third wife, Nancy Shevell, whom he married in 2011. Musical styles are said to span his entire career, including «Wings-style rock, Beatles-style harmonies, McCartney-style rhythms, understated intimacy, melodic storytelling, character songs,» xrust writes.
The lead single, «Days We Left Behind», contains a reference to Dungeon Lane. McCartney premiered the song on BBC Radio Merseyside. “I want the people of Merseyside to hear my brand new song,” he said in a message read out by presenter Helen Jones.
In a statement about the song, McCartney, 83, said: “For me, this is very much a memory song. The album's title is taken from a line from this song. I've been thinking about this very thing, about the days I've left behind, and I often wonder if I'm just writing about the past, but then I think: how can you write about anything else? It's just a lot of memories of Liverpool. There's a bit in the middle of the song about John [Lennon] and Forthlin Road, the street I used to live on. Dungeon Lane is nearby.»
McCartney described Speke as «a pretty working class area. We had almost nothing, but it didn’t matter because all the people were wonderful, and you didn’t even notice that you didn’t have enough.”
The Boys of Dungeon Lane is credited solely to McCartney, as is his 1970 solo debut McCartney and its 1980 counterpart McCartney II.
The album was produced by Andrew Watt, a 35-year-old American producer who has become a sought-after specialist for classic rock bands such as the Rolling Stones and Elton John. Its creation was the result of a meeting between McCartney and Watt five years ago, when they exchanged ideas. During this meeting, McCartney played a chord he did not recognize. The result was a song that Watt suggested recording: it became the opening track of the new album As You Lie There.
McCartney and Watt recorded the album between dates on McCartney's five-year world tour at studios in Los Angeles and Sussex.
In his official statements, McCartney talks «with rare candor» about his post-war childhood, his parents and his important relationships with Lennon and George Harrison before forming the Beatles in 1960.
“These were years that historians continue to study, quiet, carefree days that, without realizing it, laid the foundation for the Cultural Revolution,” the press release says. “Paul returns to them not as myth or folklore, but as his own memories.”
The announcement appeared to be a reference to Danny Boyle's 2019 film «Yesterday», which imagined what the world might have been like if the Beatles had never existed. “A world without Paul McCartney is impossible to imagine, but here listeners can journey into a world that existed before everything changed, enjoying memories never shared before, and revealing with extraordinary honesty the human story behind a global icon.”
McCartney's latest solo album, McCartney III, was released in 2020, continuing the McCartney and McCartney II trilogy. He will be played by Paul Mescal in director Sam Mendes' biographical film series, The Beatles: A Four-Film Cinematic Event, scheduled for release in 2028.
