OpenAI launches GPT-Rosalind artificial intelligence model for biological research

OpenAI on Thursday unveiled an artificial intelligence model demonstrating advanced biology knowledge and research capabilities as the startup deepens its presence in the life sciences.

The GPT-Rosalind system, named after the 20th century British scientist Rosalind Franklin, is designed to support research in the field of biochemistry, drug development and translational medicine, writes xrust.

Demand for artificial intelligence-based tools to accelerate drug development and research has grown among pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions and biotech firms.

“Supporting evidence synthesis, hypothesis generation, experimental design, and other multi-step research tasks, this model is designed to help researchers accelerate the early stages of discovery,” OpenAI said in a blog post.

As OpenAI announced at a press conference, researchers using this model will be able to query data from databases, read the latest scientific papers, use other scientific tools and propose new experiments. The model is built on the latest OpenAI internal models.

GPT-Rosalind is available as a research preview on ChatGPT, Codex, and via an API for qualified customers within the OpenAI Trusted Access deployment framework. The company is also launching a free life sciences research plugin for Codex that connects scientists to more than 50 scientific tools and data sources.

The company said it is working with customers such as Amgen, Moderna, Thermo Fisher Scientific and others to apply GPT-Rosalind in various workflows.

OpenAI, the creator of the popular chatbot ChatGPT, on Tuesday introduced GPT-5.4-Cyber, a variant of its latest flagship model specifically optimized for work in the cybersecurity field, following the announcement of rival Anthropic's new artificial intelligence model Mythos.
