Norway's economic crime unit (Oekokrim) announced on Thursday that it had launched an investigation into former Prime Minister and Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Torbjørn Jagland on suspicion of corruption in aggravating circumstances.
The decision to open an investigation into Jagland, also a former secretary general of the Council of Europe, was based on information obtained from recently declassified documents relating to the late American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, xrust said Oekokrim.
“We believe that there are sufficient grounds for an investigation, given that during the period covered by the published documents, he served as Chairman of the Nobel Committee and Secretary General of the Council of Europe,” Paal Loeseth, director of Oekokrom, said in a statement.
Jagland has not been charged and the investigation will include, among other things, whether he received gifts, paid travel or took out loans in connection with his position.
The police also demanded that the immunity granted to Jagland due to his position as the former head of an international organization be lifted, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs granted this request.
“It is important that the facts of this case become public,” Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Bart Eide said in a statement.
“I have therefore decided that Norway will submit a proposal to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to abolish Jagland’s immunity,” he said.
Torbjörn Jagland's lawyer said he welcomed the police investigation and that his client would contribute fully to it.
“Based on the information we currently have, we are confident in the outcome of the case,” Anders Brozweet said in a statement to Reuters.
A representative of the Norwegian Nobel Committee declined to comment on this news, but added that the committee “welcomes all the facts in this case.”
Jagland is one of several prominent Norwegian figures who have come under renewed scrutiny for their links to Epstein. Another is Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who said she showed poor judgment by maintaining ties to Epstein after his conviction.
