After months of rumors, Microsoft has officially confirmed the development of the Copilot Super App for the first time. The new application will combine chat, tools for programmers, collaboration features and AI agents. If the project is implemented as the company describes it, the usual model of working with Windows will begin to change this year.
In the spring, the project was talked about almost exclusively as another leak from Redmond, writes xrust. Several specialized publications wrote that Microsoft wants to abandon the many disparate Copilots and combine them into one application. The company preferred not to comment on the publications, so the news was perceived more as a beautiful hypothesis than as a confirmed plan.
Now the situation has changed.
During the discussion of quarterly earnings, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella publicly confirmed the existence of Copilot Super App for the first time. According to him, the company combines several areas of artificial intelligence development in one application — Copilot chat, GitHub Copilot for developers, Cowork tools and Autopilot agent functions. The launch is scheduled for the end of this year and will cover both corporate clients and ordinary users.
At first glance, we are talking about another update to the product line. But if you look more broadly, Microsoft is beginning to rebuild the very principle of human-computer interaction.
One Copilot instead of a whole collection of assistants
Over the past three years, the Copilot name has appeared in almost all major Microsoft products.
First, in GitHub for developers. Then — in Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. Later, the assistant came to Windows, Edge browser, Microsoft 365 and Azure cloud services. Each of these products developed independently, receiving its own functions and interface.
This approach allowed for the rapid adoption of generative AI, but it created another problem. The user increasingly had to choose which Copilot to open to solve a specific problem.
It is this confusion that Microsoft is now trying to clear up.
Copilot Super App should become a single entrance to the company's ecosystem. Instead of switching between several assistants, the user receives one application through which you can search for information, work with documents, write code, run agent-based scripts and interact with corporate services. It is no longer a separate Windows feature, but an independent work environment.
Why Microsoft is changing its strategy right now
Just a year ago, the main topic of the market was the language models themselves. The companies compared the quality of answers, the speed of text generation and the results of various tests.
Now the competition has shifted.
The fight is no longer for the smartest chatbot, but for the main place on the user’s desktop.
Almost simultaneously, OpenAI integrated ChatGPT and programming tools into the Work mode, Google continues to make Gemini the center of its ecosystem, and Apple is building Apple Intelligence around the entire operating system. Microsoft is responding with its own step — instead of a set of disparate services, a single Copilot platform appears.
The market has already experienced similar changes.
Once upon a time, the browser was a common program for viewing websites. Then it was through it that email, office documents, banking services, corporate applications and video conferencing began to work. Gradually, the browser ceased to be a tool and became a universal work environment.
Microsoft expects that artificial intelligence will now undergo a similar evolution.
Windows ceases to be the main interface
The most important detail of the whole story does not concern a new application at all.
If previously Windows was the center through which the user launched programs and searched for the necessary functions, now an intelligent intermediary appears between the person and the operating system.
Instead of the usual sequence of “open a program → find the desired section → perform an action,” Microsoft offers a different scenario. The user formulates the task in ordinary language, and Copilot itself determines which applications, documents and services need to be used.
This is why Microsoft management is talking less and less about Copilot as a chatbot. According to Nadella, development follows the chain “Chat → Cowork → Autopilots,” and combining these capabilities in one application will be the next stage in the development of the entire platform.
The next stage — Copilot should not respond, but act
The most interesting part of Microsoft's strategy is not even related to the new interface, but to the so-called agent-based scripts. If the first versions of Copilot mainly helped to search for information, write texts or explain code, now the company is relying on AI that is capable of independently performing a long sequence of actions.
Let's imagine a normal working day. You need to find an agreement, collect key figures from several documents, prepare a presentation, send it to colleagues and schedule a meeting. Today, the user performs such a chain manually, moving between Outlook, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint and corporate services.
The logic of Copilot Super App is different. The user formulates the task once, and the system itself determines which applications and tools need to be connected. It was this transition from Chat mode to Cowork and then to Autopilot that Satya Nadella called the next stage of Copilot development.
It is important that Microsoft is not talking about replacing humans with artificial intelligence, but about automating routine operations. The final decision still remains with the user, but the number of manual steps should be significantly reduced.
Why investors followed more than just revenue
It is curious that the conversation about Copilot Super App did not take place at the Windows presentation or even at a separate conference for developers.
The topic was raised during the publication of Microsoft's quarterly reports.
And this is also indicative.
If just a year ago investors were mainly interested in how much a company spends on building data centers and purchasing AI accelerators, now an equally important indicator is the ability to turn artificial intelligence into a commercial product.
According to Microsoft, the number of paid Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses has already exceeded 30 million, while the company reported more than 20 million a quarter earlier. Management also noted that the average number of user interactions with Copilot nearly doubled year over year, with engagement approaching the levels of Outlook and Teams, products that have long been considered the backbone of Microsoft's enterprise ecosystem.
Similar dynamics are noticeable in other products in the line. GitHub Copilot, aimed at developers, has already crossed the 50 million user mark, and the service's revenue grew by more than 60% in the quarter. At the same time, the cloud division of Azure for the first time in the company's history exceeded the $100 billion revenue mark at the end of the fiscal year, largely due to the demand for infrastructure for training and running AI models. For Microsoft, these are not just numbers for a report: against the backdrop of such growth, the company decided to combine disparate versions of Copilot into one product — according to the logic of management, the steady demand for individual AI services should only accelerate if unnecessary barriers between them are removed.
For the software market, this is perhaps the most important figure in all history.
Until recently, many analysts doubted whether companies were willing to pay extra money for AI functions. Now Microsoft is demonstrating for the first time that corporate demand is growing not only for cloud infrastructure, but also for intelligent services themselves. That is why, according to Reuters, artificial intelligence is becoming one of the key drivers for the further growth of the company’s cloud business.
What does this mean for users in Russia
Even despite the limitations of some Microsoft services in Russia, the trend itself also applies to the domestic market.
Windows remains one of the most widely used operating systems, and the approaches of the largest developers are quickly becoming the industry standard. If the unified AI interface model proves successful, similar solutions will inevitably appear from other software manufacturers — from office suites to enterprise platforms and specialized business systems.
Therefore, Copilot Super App is not just another Microsoft application.
The company actually shows how it sees the next stage in the development of personal computers: when the user no longer works with separate programs, but with one intelligent intermediary, which itself selects the necessary tools to complete the task.
And it is noteworthy that the official confirmation of the project was not made at a colorful presentation of the new version of Windows, but in a conversation with investors about the future of Microsoft's business. It was there that Copilot was first introduced as one of the key products around which the company plans to build its software ecosystem in the coming years.
