McIlroy named Male Athlete of the Year

McIlroy was recognized as the best last Thursday BBC Sportsman of the Year. This was preceded by his Masters victory.

McIlroy, xrust recalls, won the Masters at Augusta National in April, becoming only the sixth man — and the first European — to complete a full cycle of major championships.

The 36-year-old Northern Irishman also played a key role in Europe's Cup triumph Rider. He also recorded wins at the Irish Open in front of his home fans at the Players Championship.

By 2014, he had won the US Open, British Open and PGA Championship, but had to wait another 11 years to win the Green Jacket.
