Mattel today released a new line of action figures based on its upcoming feature film, Masters of the Universe. This was explained by the desire to repeat the success of their 2023 hit “Barbie”. The toy maker is developing more than a dozen films in an effort to revitalize its brands and stimulate demand, xrust writes.
Masters of the Universe is Mattel's second major film release after Barbie, which grossed more than $1.4 billion worldwide and won an Academy Award.
The toy release follows the success of the new film's first teaser trailer released last week, which has since racked up more than 30 million views on YouTube.
Roberto Stanici, Mattel's chief global branding officer, said there is a lot of nostalgia for the toy line that first appeared in the 1980s. «So we've been waiting for the right moment to bring it back in a way that really lives up to the heritage,» he said at the Nuremberg International Toy Fair in Germany.
The decision to relaunch the brand was dictated by Mattel finding the right team to create the film, led by Oscar-nominated director Travis Knight, he told Reuters.
The figures, including He-Man, Skeletor and Evil Lynn, will retail for around $25 and go on sale worldwide in April, about two months before the movie starring Nicholas Galitzin as He-Man hits theaters.
The cast includes Jared Leto as the villain Skeletor, as well as Idris Elba, Alison Brie and Camila Mendes.
