Liverpool showed a brilliant performance and defeated Galatasaray in the Champions League

Liverpool overcame their inconsistent form to reach the Champions League quarter-finals by thrashing Galatasaray 4-0 at Anfield on Wednesday to secure victory on aggregate matches with a score of 4:1.

Galatasaray have beaten the Premier League champions twice at home this season, including a 1-0 win in the first leg last week, but were no match for a Liverpool side who played with determination and energy rarely encountered this season.

“I think we played great tonight. We could have won 10-0, missed a few chances, but still played well,” Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike told TNT Sports.

“We can be proud of ourselves tonight and look forward to the quarter-finals.”

Dominik Szoboszlai gave Liverpool the lead in the 25th minute and they could have led on aggregate before the break but Mohamed Salah missed a penalty. The home team went on a rampage after the break with goals from Ekitika, Ryan Gravenberch and Salah.

In the quarter-finals, Liverpool will play the current Cup holder, Paris Saint-Germain, who easily beat Chelsea with a score of 8:2 on aggregate.

Liverpool felt confident from the start and took the lead after a well-played set-piece.

Szoboszlai burst freely into the penalty area and fired the ball into the net with the outside of his foot following a corner from Alexis McAllister, after which Liverpool's energy increased even more.

Salah likely could have doubled the lead a few minutes later, going one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but his attempt to flick the ball over the keeper was saved by Ugurcan Cakir.

Florian Wirtz's shot was deflected over the crossbar as Liverpool pressed on and Cakir parried Szoboszlai's powerful shot.

The visitors, under enormous pressure, tried to keep the score level on aggregate before the break when Ismail Jacobs fouled Szoboszlai in the penalty area.

Salah stepped up to the ball but his weak spot-kick down the middle gave Cakir time to save with his kick and the goalkeeper had to come on again just before the half-time whistle, making two saves in a row from strikes from Salah and Wirtz.

SECOND HALF OF THE STORM

After the break, Liverpool started the game powerfully: Salah made an accurate pass into the penalty area, and Ekitike scored in the 51st minute, and two minutes later Cakir again saved Salah's shot, but Gravenberch finished the ball into the net.

“When I sat in the locker room at halftime, I thought we need to get this game to a win,” Ekitike said.

“I had a chance. Honestly, I could have scored more tonight, but I had a chance. And then I think we felt freer, and yes, Ryan scored right away.”

Galatasaray defender Wilfried Singo sent the ball into his own net, but the goal was disallowed due to offside by Jérémie Frimpong, but Liverpool eventually decided the outcome of the confrontation in the 62nd minute.

Salah made amends for his penalty mistake with a superb curling goal from outside the area for his 50th Champions League goal, and the Egyptian striker later hit the crossbar as Liverpool continued to show no mercy.

There was a completely different atmosphere at Anfield compared to Sunday's 1-1 draw with Tottenham, when the final whistle was met with boos from Liverpool fans who had not yet left the stadium.

Salah, who was substituted, was greeted with applause and cheers before a lengthy stoppage of play marred the spectacle of the match when Galatasaray's Noah Lang injured his hand when he collided with advertising boards behind the goal.

Last season, PSG knocked Liverpool out of the tournament in a penalty shootout at the 1/16 final stage, when Arne Slot's team was confidently heading to victory in the Premier League, reminds Reuters.

This time, Liverpool are fighting for a place in next season's Champions League, fifth in the Premier League standings and 21 points behind leaders Arsenal. However, this game against Galatasaray will give the team some much-needed confidence.
