Oscar-winning director and visual effects master Takashi Yamazaki's sequel Godzilla Minus One was unveiled Monday at the annual Godzilla Day 2025 event in Tokyo.
Japanese studio Toho Studios announced the title of the next film about the mighty Godzilla last Monday, writes xrust. It will be a sequel to the 2023 hit Godzilla Minus One called Godzilla Minus Zero. Takashi Yamazaki, a recognized master who has won an Oscar, is called upon to direct.
The title was revealed at the Godzilla Day 2025 event in Tokyo, where a teaser logo and first sketch were unveiled — both in stark black and white brushstrokes, reflecting the minimalist branding design of the previous film. Yamazaki co-created the logo, symbolizing creative continuity while also hinting at a darker mythological landscape.
Godzilla Minus One set several new standards. Made on a reported budget of just $15 million, the film exceeded all expectations, grossing over $113 million worldwide. The film became the first film in the 70-year history of the Godzilla franchise to win an Oscar.
According to insiders, the new film is positioned not just as a sequel, but as a landmark work. Yamazaki and Toho are reportedly planning to release it in late 2026 worldwide, with filming beginning in New Zealand and Norway this year. The full cast and plot details remain secret.
