Thousands of Michael Jackson fans, many dressed in military jackets or aviator sunglasses inspired by the pop icon's many famous looks, gathered in Berlin on Friday night for the international premiere of the biopic «Michael» featuring the singer's nephew. Jaafar Jackson, who was 12 years old when his uncle died in 2009, told xrust that he immersed himself in archival footage and also drew on his own memories to prepare for the role.
“One of my favorite moments was the first time I saw him perform on stage in New York, that was the best thing for me,” he told reporters on the red carpet.
How does the on-screen Michael correspond to the real one
Jackie Jackson, who performed with as a young Michael Jackson in the Jackson 5 while also building his own music career, he said his brother's portrayal was so convincing that at times while watching the film he forgot he was actually looking at Jafar.
The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, chronicles the rise of the “King of Pop” from the lead singer of the Motown group Jackson 5, which consisted of him and his brothers, to the launch of Michael’s solo career with such ubiquitous hits as “Thriller” and “Beat It.” The film highlights the iconic outfits that accompanied them.
The biggest opening weekend box office gross for a musical biopic in the US and Canada was $60.2 million (2015's Straight Outta Compton).
Michael, which opens April 24, is projected by Box Office Pro to surpass that figure, possibly grossing more than $80 million.
A fine line between reality and fiction
But any reference to the most controversial aspect of Jackson's story — the child molestation allegations — was removed after lawyers for his heirs realized that a legal agreement with the accuser prohibited discussion of the allegations in the film, according to a source familiar with the production.
Jackson, who maintained his innocence, was acquitted in a 2005 criminal trial.
After his death, other accusers filed additional civil lawsuits, but Jackson was never convicted of child sexual abuse in a criminal court or found guilty in a civil case.
Asked about the film's exclusion of controversial aspects of Jackson's life, producer Graham King, whose credits include Bohemian Rhapsody, said Friday in Berlin that he had «been studying all aspects of Michael's life for many years» and was pleased to tell this «story in his memory.»
