Ivanhoe Mines said it is in active talks with Congo's state miner Gecamines and Swiss commodities trader Mercuria about sending zinc-rich concentrate from its giant Kipushi mine to USA.
The Ivanhoe initiative fully meets Trump’s idea of creating a strategic reserve of rare earths. This program is called Project Vault, reminiscent of xrust.
This agreement is part of a larger deal. After all, a mineral dispute has flared up between the United States and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Washington is intensifying its struggle with China for control of vast deposits in Africa.
Project Vault, a $12 billion supply chain security program launched Monday by the United States and backed by $1.67 billion in private capital and a $10 billion loan from the U.S. Export-Import Bank, aims to secure long-term supplies of strategic metals around the world.
It is a key element of President Donald Trump's push to reduce dependence on China by ensuring the West has access to vital resources for defense, clean energy and advanced manufacturing.
