On Friday, Indian startup Sarvam, which specializes in developing artificial intelligence models for local languages and users, launched its Indus Chat app for web and mobile users. OpenAI, Anthropic and Google have more competitors.
The launch comes as India has become a key battleground for the adoption of generative AI, writes xrust. Recently, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that ChatGPT has over 100 million weekly active users in India, and Anthropic reported that India accounts for 5.8% of Claude's total usage.
The Indus app serves as the chat interface for the recently announced Sarvam 105B, the company's large language model with 105 billion parameters. The app launch comes two days after Bengaluru-based Sarvam launched its 105B and 30B models at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi earlier this week.
At the summit, the startup also talked about enterprise sector initiatives and hardware development plans, and announced partnerships with companies like HMD to bring AI to Nokia and Bosch feature phones for AI-enabled automotive applications.
Currently available in beta for iOS , Android and web, the Indus app allows users to type or speak queries and receive responses in text and audio formats. Users can sign in using their phone number, Google account, or Apple ID. The service is currently only available in India.
The application currently has some limitations. Users can't delete chat history without deleting their account, and there's no option to disable the app's behavior analysis feature, which can sometimes slow down response times. Sarvam also warned that access may be limited as computing power gradually expands.
