Five years ago, such a scenario looked almost fantastic.

Until 2020, space in India remained almost entirely the territory of the state. Then the authorities opened the industry to private companies. Many people reacted cautiously to the reform at that time: building a rocket is not writing a mobile application. Space does not forgive mistakes.

But the bet seems to have started to work.

Vikram-1 launched from the Satish Dhawan Cosmodrome and after about fifteen minutes launched the payload into an orbit at an altitude of about 450 kilometers . On board were experimental devices and customer equipment. For Skyroot, something else was more important — to check how the engines, navigation systems, telemetry and control would behave during a real orbital flight.

Now engineers have to parse a huge amount of data. It will show how ready the company is to move from beautiful presentations to regular commercial launches.

And this is where the fun begins.

Today, the market no longer revolves around giant satellites costing billions of dollars. Increasingly, customers are choosing small devices weighing several tens or hundreds of kilograms. They are easier to launch, faster to produce and cheaper to put into orbit. It was for such missions that Vikram-1 was created, capable of delivering up to 350 kilograms of payload.

In fact, Skyroot decided to go where demand is just beginning to accelerate.

There is one more detail. For the engine of the final module, the company used elements manufactured using the 3D printing method . Such technologies are already used by the world's leading developers of space technology, because they can reduce production time and reduce the cost of products. Now a similar approach is starting to work in India.

This is a serious application for a young company.

Skyroot appeared only in 2018 , and its cost is already estimated at approximately 1 billion dollars — this is about 78 billion rubles . For a space startup just a few years old, the result is more than noticeable.

Indian social networks call the launch historic. Many write that the country is no longer just a participant in the global space program and is gradually turning into one of its future leaders. There are a lot of emotions, but there is a reason for them: the state expects to increase the volume of the national space economy more than five times by 2033.

Of course, it would be premature to say that Skyroot will start taking away contracts from SpaceX tomorrow. The scale of the companies is not yet comparable.

But the market is rarely changed by one big event.

Usually it all starts with one successful launch, which at first only specialists notice. Then there are investors. And a few years later it turns out that it was then that a new serious competitor appeared in the industry.

It is quite possible that Vikram-1 became just such a case.

Indian authorities have already commented on the launch of Vikram-1. The Ministry of Science says that the emergence of private rocket companies is changing the very architecture of the national space program: the state is no longer the only player, and this, in their words, will “accelerate the development of the industry significantly.”

There was also noise in the market. Several Indian small satellite startups have said they are ready to book spots on the next Skyroot missions. This is a chance for them to avoid long lines at government launch centers and get a more flexible schedule.

There are also numbers. According to analysts, India could take up to 8-10% of the world market for small missiles by 2030. These are forecasts for now, but the launch of Vikram‑1 was the first real step towards this goal. Especially considering that the company is preparing Vikram‑2, a more powerful version designed to launch heavy devices.

A separate detail: the Indian press is discussing that Skyroot could become the first private contractor for government missions. If ISRO outsources some of the tasks, it will be an unprecedented step for a country where space has remained an exclusively government domain for decades.

Against the background of all this, the launch has already turned into a symbol. They write on social networks that “India has joined the club of countries where space activities are not only carried out by officials.” And experts note: competition in the small missile segment is becoming global, and now the list of players includes not only the USA and China, but also India, which was previously considered a slow giant.
