It recently became known that the FBI gained access to deleted Signal messages on the accused’s iPhone, writes xrust. The surprise for this person was that he had previously deleted this incriminating material.
Note that the FBI was able to find the messages themselves on the device. The programmers explained that they were able to extract Signal's incoming messages from the defendant's push notification database. Most people don't know that devices like the iPhone have a similar database of push notifications and that it can be used to recover deleted messages.
However, experts advise that there is an easy way to protect yourself and ensure that no one can access sensitive information from this space on your iPhone or any other device that receives sensitive notifications.
The Objective See Foundation blog, which covered the problem with Signal messages on Mac, says that all notifications and messages are recorded in the macOS Notification Center, everything is recorded by the operating system. It appears that a recent FBI investigation used a similar loophole to obtain data from iOS notifications.
So how can you protect yourself? The safest option is to turn off notifications completely, which will prevent any information from being stored in this database, but this is not practical for most people. Most of us want to receive notifications about new emails, messages, or important app updates.
However, you can prevent your device from displaying message content in notifications, preventing that information from appearing in the database. In this case, each of your notifications will look something like this: “You have a new message,” and not: “Pranay Parab: My Netflix password is Lifehacker.” Again, it's unclear how this database works and which platforms use the same database as the iPhone, but for privacy and security purposes, here are the steps for most major device platforms below:
Protect sensitive notifications on iPhone
Your iPhone has the ability to hide the contents of messages from all app notifications. You can enable this feature by going to “Settings” > «Notifications» > «Show preview» and selecting «Never». There's also an option to turn off notification previews for certain apps. To do this, go to “Settings” > Notifications, scroll down and tap the name of the app for which you want to hide the notification preview. Select Show Preview > «Never» and repeat this step for all other applications for which you want to hide notifications.
