Hell in the Philippines: a super earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 triggered a tsunami and the collapse of schools — dozens of dead

News

A devastating underwater earthquake of magnitude 7.8 occurred on the morning of June 8, 2026 off the southern coast of the Philippine island of Mindanao. According to preliminary data from emergency services, the natural disaster has killed at least 32 people, more than 130 were seriously injured, and coastal areas are being hastily evacuated due to the threat of three-meter waves.

A blow in the midst of a school line: a chronicle of the disaster

Tremors of colossal force were recorded at 07:37 local time (in Moscow at that time it was deep night — 02:37). The outbreak lay in the Philippine Sea at a depth of about 55 kilometers, and the epicenter was only 20–26 kilometers off the coast of the southern province of Sarangani.

The disaster coincided with the start of the new school year. The first tremors caught hundreds of children at the morning ceremonial assembly. The chief of police of the city of Alabel, Benji Ancheta, told Reuters reporters that the ground disappeared from under his feet right during the ceremony of raising the national flag, which caused severe panic among schoolchildren and teachers, several people lost consciousness.

Frightening footage from local educational institutions is already spreading on social networks. One video shows dozens of children huddling together in fear on the floor as the brick shed literally crumbles to dust behind them. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has already announced an emergency suspension of classes throughout the Mindanao region. According to the Ministry of Education, the emergency directly affected over 3.2 million students.

Destruction in the “tuna capital” and the threat of a tsunami

The most serious blow hit the large port city of General Santos, which in Southeast Asia is unofficially called the “capital of tuna processing.” The population of this metropolis is more than 720 thousand people. Dozens of people were trapped here under the rubble.

The four-story office building where the local radio station was located was completely destroyed. Eyewitnesses also reported piles of construction debris at the site of a popular Jollibee fast food restaurant. The city's international airport is completely closed, dozens of domestic and international flights have been cancelled, and runways are being checked for deep cracks.

Immediately after the main impact, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued an emergency alert. Authorities in the Philippines and neighboring Indonesia urged residents to immediately flee inland to higher ground.

“Get to higher ground now! Don't wait! Your lives are much more important than any property left at home!” — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. addressed the nation.

A tidal wave of about one meter in height has already been recorded off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, as well as on the remote Sangihe Islands. The echo of the Philippine emergency has reached other countries: emergency warnings for ships and beaches were issued by the meteorological services of Malaysia, Japan and Taiwan. Fortunately for residents of the Russian Far East, this seismic event does not pose a danger to the coasts of Kamchatka, Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands.

Expert opinion: why is the region constantly “shaking”?

Seismologists from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) explain that the reason for such a powerful cataclysm was sudden movements in the area of the so-called Cotabato — a deep-sea ocean gutters.

The archipelago is located in the zone of the Pacific “Ring of Fire” — a tectonic fault where several lithospheric plates converge. To understand the scale: the local underground processes are capable of generating colossal energy. Damage from such disasters is estimated in billions of Philippine pesos (which is equivalent to tens of billions of rubles when translated into Russian currency).

Experts warn that it is too early for locals and tourists to relax. In the few hours after the main shock, instruments recorded more than 200 aftershocks. Nine of them had a destructive magnitude greater than 6.5. According to experts, seismic activity in Sarangani and adjacent waters will continue for at least the next few months. Army units and heavy equipment have already been deployed to the Philippines to clear the rubble. The death toll is likely to continue to rise as the search and rescue operation progresses.

Update at 19:00 June 8, 2026: updated data of rescue services

Towards the end of the day, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council of the Philippines (NDRRMC), as well as international monitoring missions, provided updated data on the scale of the disaster. The picture of the tragedy was supplemented with important details:

  • Landslides and point collapses: Rescuers determined that most of the 32 dead in Sarangani province were victims of giant mudslides that descended from the hills directly onto residential buildings. In the neighboring regions of South Cotabato and Davao, people were fatally injured when debris fell from walls, including when a local mosque was partially destroyed. At least 12 people are currently officially listed as missing .
  • Tsunami dynamics: The maximum height of the tidal wave near the epicenter of the cataclysm (in the Kiamba municipality area) was 1.4 meters . A wave of 83 centimeters reached the coast of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. By now, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has completely removed the latest threats — repeated anomalous waves in the water area are no longer expected.
  • Infrastructural collapse: The affected 720,000th General Santos plunged into complete darkness. Due to the breakdown of main power lines, the city is completely without power, and the supply of fresh water has also been cut off. Local authorities are urgently deploying mobile diesel generators and organizing drinking water distribution points. The seismological service has already recorded over 200 aftershocks, which greatly hampers the full removal of the rubble and prevents engineers from assessing the safety of surviving high-rise buildings.
  • Destruction of the university: The disaster caused major material damage for the education sector in the region. In General Santos, a through collapse of load-bearing structures and the facade of one of the buildings of the prestigious University of Notre Dame de Dadiangas ( Notre Dame of Dadiangas University ) was recorded. A tragedy with many casualties among students was avoided only because classes were not being held in that part of the building at the time of the impact.

The total economic damage from the cataclysm, according to preliminary estimates, already exceeds hundreds of millions of pesos (hundreds of millions of rubles), and restoration work in Sarangani will take more than one month.
