Half a billion on nostalgia: Netflix spent a record budget to say goodbye to “Stranger Things”

Movies

Nine years, four seasons and a whole generation that grew up on the adventures of the guys from Hawkins. Now Netflix is closing this chapter—and doing it in a way worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster. The budget for the final season of Stranger Things was between $400 million and $480 million. This is the most expensive television project in the history of the platform.

And here's a surprise: the last episode will be shown not only on Netflix, but also in US cinemas! The Duffer Brothers want audiences to experience the full power of their work with sound and picture.

What was shown in the first episodes

The action takes place in the fall of 1987. A year and a half has passed since the events of the fourth season. Hawkins has been declared a quarantine zone, the government is hunting for Eleven, and Vecna is hiding somewhere.

The first four episodes received a warm reception:

  • 8.9 on IMDb
  • 92% among critics on Rotten Tomatoes
  • 87% among viewers

As noted on Xrust.ru, the series returned to the atmosphere of the first season, but with the scale of the fourth. Each episode lasts from 90 to 120 minutes — almost full-length films.

After the ending

The story will not end completely. Netflix has already announced an animated spin-off, Stranger Things: Tales from 1985, which will premiere in 2026. The action will take place between the second and third seasons.

Prepare popcorn and handkerchiefs.
