Hacked — it's your own fault: Microsoft AI erases user accounts without the right to appeal

The hacker guessed the password — and instead of help, the victim receives an “irreversible” sentence from Microsoft: the company’s artificial intelligence resets a quarter of a century of correspondence, photos and purchased games, and they can only be returned through a virus scandal in social networks.

Streamer Joshua Kane maintained a Microsoft account for 25 years, xrust reported. In mid-July, he was hacked — and instead of being saved, he received a digital execution. Technical support confirmed: yes, you are the owner, yes, you were hacked, but it is impossible to restore your profile. The reason is that the hacker managed to change the security data, and the company’s internal protocol in such a situation dictates that it should not be repaired, but rather buried.

A library of games worth thousands of dollars, mail, documents and photographs of Kane's son from birth were demolished. The first response from support is “the decision is final, there are no exceptions.” What saved Kane was not the appeals department, but publicity: the post received over two million views in 11 hours, and only then the account was returned. The victim himself honestly admitted: without the viral scandal, he would have been left with nothing — the company reacts to resonance, not to facts.

The story is not isolated. In a similar scenario, Microsoft lost access to 7,000 children's photos from another user who simply set up an iPad using an old account. A similar AI logic works on YouTube: demonetization appeals are rejected in seconds, and one blogger sued the site for the restoration of payments — and still has not received them.

Business also suffered. A German entrepreneur, registering in the Microsoft AI Cloud Partner Program, was blocked immediately after sending documents — automatic verification considered the new account suspicious. The support form simply did not open.

Behind the scenes of the scandal is saving on real people: Microsoft has cut quality control departments and transferred moderation to neural networks, which ban on formal grounds and are not responsible for errors. One of the security researchers, without waiting for a reward for the vulnerabilities found, began publishing them in the public domain — to spite the vendor. Users are advised the same as after any loss of trust in the cloud: keep offline copies on external drives and not store the only copy of memory where the algorithm can erase it.

Russian users are familiar with the plot firsthand. After the departure of Adobe, whose corporate licenses will no longer work on July 7, and regular failures with Windows activation due to blocking, Kane’s story once again shows: a cloud account is not property, but a permission to use someone else’s infrastructure, which can be revoked without explanation. Keeping backup copies of important files locally in such a situation is not paranoia, but a necessity.
