Fans of The Witcher 3 have the opportunity to play Gwent again against real opponents. A new update to The Witcher 3 Online modification added full-fledged online card duels with deck synchronization and a number of additional features.
While CD Projekt RED is focused on developing new projects in the Witcher universe, the fan community continues to independently expand the capabilities of the cult RPG, writes xrust. This time, enthusiasts did what many players have been asking for since the release of the original game: they added a full-fledged online mode for Gwent in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Update 3.0 for the popular modification The Witcher 3 Online allows users to arrange card fights with each other over the Internet. Moreover, we are not talking about an independent game, but specifically about the Gwent built into The Witcher 3, which received network functions thanks to the efforts of modders.
The main feature of the innovation was the complete synchronization of decks. Players do not need to create separate card sets or start progression over again. For online matches, the same cards that were collected during the story campaign are used. In other words, if a user has spent dozens of hours searching for rare cards throughout the Continent, he will be able to use them against other people without any restrictions.
The creators of the modification also provided several additional features. Users can challenge each other to a duel directly in the game world, choose different game modes, and even place bets with in-game currency. After the match is completed, the winner receives part of the opponent's coins, which adds additional excitement to card battles.
For many fans of the series, this news has special meaning. CD Projekt RED's standalone card game GWENT has long been considered one of the most successful offshoots of the franchise. However, back in 2023, the Polish studio announced the end of active support for the project and transferred it to community support mode. Since then, there have been virtually no new major updates, and a significant part of the audience has returned to the original Gwent from The Witcher 3.
That is why many players call the emergence of a full-fledged multiplayer mode for classic Gwent a kind of revival of their favorite card game. The news was received very positively on thematic forums and on social networks. Some users note that they have long dreamed of playing exactly the same decks that they collected in the single-player campaign, and not using a separate version of the card game with different mechanics and balance.
It is worth noting that the modification of The Witcher 3 Online itself has been developing for quite some time. Previously, she added a full-fledged multiplayer mode to the game with dedicated servers, the ability to explore the world with friends, demonstration of character equipment to other players, synchronization of movements and the combat system, as well as a set of social functions such as emotions and joint recreation in game locations. Essentially, the mod turns a single-player RPG into a kind of cooperative version of The Witcher.
Interestingly, interest in Gwent has not waned even more than ten years after the release of The Witcher 3. Fans continue to create their own versions of the card game, develop new sets of cards, release balanced modifications, and even make physical tabletop sets. The community remains one of the most active among RPG fans.
Against this background, it is especially noteworthy that CD Projekt RED itself also does not forget about the card component of the franchise. Studio representatives recently confirmed that the upcoming Songs of the Past expansion for The Witcher 3 will feature new maps for Gwent. In addition, the developers continue to work on a cross-platform mod support system, which will make it easier to distribute custom modifications between PCs and consoles.
It is unknown whether online Gwent will become part of official updates in the future. However, it can already be stated that modders have managed to implement one of the most popular features among fans of the series. Years after the release of The Witcher 3 and the actual end of support for a separate version of GWENT, players again had the opportunity to sort things out at the card table not with artificial intelligence, but with live opponents.
For many fans, this is exactly the case when the community independently breathed new life into their favorite game and proved that the legendary Gwent is still capable of uniting players around the world.
