Gothic is waiting for a free update: photo mode, Marvin mode and a transparent hint at the second part

Alkimia Interactive thanked the players with a video — and at the same time told what they would surprise Gothic 1 Remake in the coming months: photo mode, alternative progression, mod support and the legendary Marvin cheat mode are returning, and for free.

What they promise to add

The video turned out more like a postcard to fans than a regular trailer, notes xrust. The head of the Alkimia Interactive studio and the game director, Reinhard Pollitz, personally thanked the community for the warm reception of the remake — and immediately rolled out a list of what will appear in the game over the coming months. No specific dates were given, which is more the norm than the exception for THQ Nordic.

The list includes:

  • photo mode — the ability to build character frames and share screenshots on social networks;
  • alternative progression mechanics — a new way of leveling up, different from the usual one;
  • support for modifications ;
  • Marvin Mode — the same debugging mode from the 2001 original.

Why bring back the cheat mode after a quarter of a century

For those who missed the first Gothic: Marvin Mode is an in-game developer console that fans have long turned into a full-fledged tool for pampering. With its help, you could change the character’s health, mana and damage, summon monsters and NPCs right in the middle of the Colony, or teleport to any point on the map — right up to the very cliff from which you were destined to fall.

There are no details about what the mode will look like this time, but it is logical to expect adaptation to a gamepad — the remake, unlike the original, was released not only on PC, but also on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.

How the remake was actually received

Formally, the release took place in June, and since then the game has managed to accumulate numbers that explain why the studio decided to continue supporting it for free, and not switch to the next project. In the first week, about 500 thousand copies were sold — a result that for a project with a budget noticeably below the AAA level can be called more than convincing. The press rated the remake reservedly—about 76 points on Metacritic—but players on Steam were more generous: the rating remained in the “very positive” range, rising to 88% by the fall based on tens of thousands of reviews.

Russian players, by the way, were especially lucky: the remake featured a full Russian localization, and some of the actors who worked on the original “Gothika” back in the early 2000s were returned to voice acting. On Russian Steam, the game is sold for 2,700 rubles — with an American price of $50, the difference looks quite humane.

What's up with Gothic 2

A separate intrigue of the video is Pollitsa’s phrase that the studio’s next project will most likely be presented at the THQ Nordic Showcase in 2027. The name was not mentioned, but everything points to a remake of the second part: Alkimia already has an engine, tools and some assets ready after working on the first game, so reusing the developments is the most logical step. Rumors about this have been circulating for months: in the summer, one of the Russian voice actors managed to let slip about working on Gothic 2, although the studio did not officially confirm this information at that time.

In the meantime, fans were asked to be content with what they had — and, judging by the reaction in the Steam community, this suits both those who are looking for nostalgia and those who just want to command monsters through the developer console again.
