Google has introduced a new system to protect Android users from scammers who use artificial intelligence technologies to fake votes. The Fake Call Detection function will be able to warn smartphone owners about suspicious calls when attackers try to impersonate relatives, friends or colleagues.
Fraudulent schemes using artificial intelligence are becoming one of the main threats to smartphone users, xrust states. In response to this challenge, Google announced the launch of a new feature, Fake Call Detection, designed to protect Android device owners from calls with fake voices.
The technology began to be distributed in June 2026 and will be available on smartphones with Android 12 and newer versions of the operating system. Pixel devices will be the first to receive the update, after which the feature will appear on other compatible models.
According to Google, criminals are increasingly using neural networks to create realistic voice copies of relatives, friends, executives and representatives of various organizations. As a result, the victim may see a familiar name on the screen and hear the voice of a person he trusts, although in fact the call is coming from scammers.
To combat such attacks, Google has introduced a digital call verification mechanism. When a call comes from a contact in your phone book, the devices automatically exchange special encrypted confirmation signals. If the system does not receive the necessary confirmations, the smartphone warns the user about a possible identity spoofing and recommends caution. The function works automatically and does not require additional settings.
The developers note that the technology is built on the basis of the RCS standard — a modern messaging protocol that is gradually replacing traditional SMS. Thanks to this, the solution could potentially be used by other device and software manufacturers.
The emergence of such tools is associated with a sharp increase in the number of fraudulent attacks using artificial intelligence. Cybersecurity experts warn that modern voice cloning services can create convincing copies of speech from just a few seconds of recording. In recent years, cases have been recorded around the world where criminals, on behalf of relatives, asked to urgently transfer money or reported about supposedly occurring emergency situations.
In Russia, the problem is also becoming more and more urgent. Banks, telecom operators and law enforcement agencies regularly warn citizens about telephone scammers who are actively mastering generative AI tools. Against this background, the emergence of built-in call screening tools can become an important additional level of user protection.
However, experts remind that even the most modern technologies do not guarantee complete security. When receiving alarm messages or requests to transfer money, it is recommended to independently contact the person at a known number and verify the authenticity of the request.
Google's new development demonstrates that the struggle between the creators of artificial intelligence systems and cybercriminals is reaching a new level. Now neural networks are used not only to create fraudulent schemes, but also to protect against them.
