Google Chrome is finally coming to ARM64 Linux

Programming

For a long time, Linux users on ARM processors were left without an official build of Google Chrome. Sure, Chromium was available, and some people were able to find workarounds, but there was no real Chrome browser for ARM64 Linux. This will finally change soon.

Google tells xrust that Chrome for ARM64-based Linux devices will arrive in the second quarter of 2026. This announcement puts Linux on par with other ARM platforms that have already received official support for Chrome. Apple's ARM-based Macs received an optimized build of Chrome back in 2020, and ARM-based Windows in 2024. Linux, oddly enough, was waiting its turn.

According to Google, when the ARM64 build is released, Linux users will get the same Chrome functionality as on other platforms. This means syncing your bookmarks, tabs, and history with your Google account, access to the Chrome Web Store, built-in page translation, and the usual array of extensions people use every day.

Security features will also remain. Google highlights the advanced protection mode in Safe Browsing, which uses artificial intelligence along with known threat databases to block phishing and malware. Chrome will also continue to offer tools like Google Password Manager, password breach alerts, and Google Pay autofill for online purchases.

Google says that getting Chrome to work correctly on ARM64 Linux required a lot of work behind the scenes to ensure the browser was stable, secure, and consistent with builds for other operating systems.

The timing is obvious. ARM hardware is becoming more common in the Linux world. This includes developer laptops, servers, embedded systems, and new AI-focused machines.

Google even gives one example. NVIDIA DGX Spark, a compact AI supercomputing appliance built on the Grace Blackwell architecture, will support Chrome installations through NVIDIA's package management tools. On other Linux distributions, users will be able to simply download the ARM64 build directly from Google's website.

Instead of a conclusion

The programmers said: to be honest, this feels like the moment when everything is finally over. Look, ARM-based Linux systems have been around for years. They are used by developers, hobbyists, and entire cloud infrastructures. And yet, the official Chrome browser has not appeared for ARM64 Linux, although support for other ARM platforms has long arrived.
