Гарвард развенчал миф о 10 000 шагах: сколько нужно ходить на самом деле

For a long time it was believed that a person needs to walk at least 10 thousand steps a day to maintain health. However, research by scientists from Harvard Medical School shows that a noticeable protective effect for the body is achieved with significantly less activity.

The norm of 10 thousand steps per day has long become one of the most popular guidelines for people who monitor their health, notes xrust. Many fitness bracelets and smartphones set exactly this goal by default, and its achievement is perceived as an indicator of an active lifestyle. However, new attention to research from Harvard Medical School has once again called into question the need for daily adherence to this norm.

Scientists note that the widespread figure of 10 thousand steps did not initially appear as a medical recommendation. According to researchers, its history begins in Japan in the 1960s, when one of the companies released a pedometer with a name that translated as “10 thousand step meter.” The beautiful round number turned out to be a successful marketing decision and gradually became a global standard, although there was no serious scientific basis for it.
