The Italian company Ferrari has officially introduced its first production electric car — the five-seater Luce, reports xrust. For a brand synonymous with roaring naturally aspirated V12s and petrol supercars for decades, this is not just the launch of a new model, but the biggest technological transformation in the company's modern history.
The presentation took place in Rome and immediately became one of the main events of the automotive industry in 2026. Ferrari is betting that a new generation of wealthy buyers is willing to ditch classic internal combustion engines for high-tech, premium electric cars. At the same time, the company is trying to preserve the key elements of its own identity — emotion, sound and driving sensation.
Ferrari Luce: the first family electric car of the brand
The name Luce is translated from Italian as “light”. The new car is the first five-door and five-seat Ferrari to be fully electric. Unlike the brand's traditional supercars, the model is focused not only on speed, but also on everyday comfort.
The car received a spacious interior, a trunk with a volume of about 600 liters and an enlarged body with an abundance of glass elements. According to Reuters, Ferrari expects to attract the interest of wealthy families who need a car that is both status-conscious, fast and technologically advanced.
The cost of Luce will be about 550 thousand euros, and the first deliveries to customers will begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.
More than 1000 horsepower and a range of over 500 km
Despite the transition to an electric powertrain, Ferrari has not abandoned its sporty performance. Luce is equipped with four electric motors — one for each wheel. The total power exceeds 1000 horsepower and the maximum speed is more than 310 km/h.
At the same time, the weight of the car exceeds 2.2 tons, which is typical for modern premium electric cars with large batteries. The power reserve is stated to be more than 500 kilometers.
Ferrari paid special attention to handling. The electric car received an intelligent system for distributing traction between the wheels and a number of technologies that came from motorsports and the company’s hybrid programs.
Ferrari is trying to preserve the “character” of gasoline models
The main problem that manufacturers of sports electric vehicles face is the lack of emotional engine sound. Ferrari decided to approach the issue differently than many competitors.
Instead of artificially simulating a motor, engineers have developed a system for enhancing the natural vibrations of the electric power plant. The company says the car should still provide the signature Ferrari driving experience, even without a traditional V8 or V12.
The interior is also different from many modern EVs. Ferrari kept the physical buttons and switches instead of completely switching to touch controls. The decoration uses leather, glass and anodized aluminum.
A former Apple designer participated in the development
One of the most discussed aspects of the project was the participation of the studio LoveFrom, founded by former head designer Jony Ive. It is Ive who is considered one of the creators of the visual language of modern Apple devices.
According to Reuters, the Luce's design is noticeably different from classic Ferraris. The car received smoother shapes and a minimalist interior with an emphasis on materials and digital technology.
Ferrari goes against the market trend
Interestingly, the launch of Luce comes against the backdrop of cooling interest in expensive electric supercars. Many luxury car makers have begun to reconsider their own EV plans due to weak demand. In particular, Lamborghini has already postponed the release of an all-electric model.
Ferrari itself also adjusted its strategy. If in 2022 the company expected to increase the share of electric vehicles to 40% of the model range by 2030, now the goal has been reduced to 20%. The rest of the lineup will consist of hybrids and cars with internal combustion engines.
Nevertheless, Luce should not become a mass product for Ferrari, but a demonstration of technological capabilities and an attempt to determine the future of luxury electric vehicles before competitors.
