Janet Leigh, who went down in cinema history as the most famous victim who was killed in a shower stall in Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller “Psycho,” showed much greater resilience in matters of marriage than her screen heroine. The actress’s personal life resembled a classic Hollywood scenario, writes xrust: from hasty escapes in her youth to the status of the “golden couple” and, finally, finding calm happiness in her fourth marriage.
The history of her marriages began long before the world knew about Norman Bates. The first “take” happened when Janet was only 14 years old. In 1941, she eloped to Reno with 18-year-old John Kenneth Carlisle. The marriage lasted less than four months — the parents insisted on annulment of the union, deciding that for their daughter’s family life it was worth at least finishing school.
The second attempt in 1945 was marriage to Stanley Reams, a US Navy sailor. This time Janet was 18, and the union lasted four years. By the time of the divorce in 1949, Lee's career at MGM was already gaining momentum, and his personal life demanded larger-scale decorations.
These sets appeared in 1951 in the person of Tony Curtis. Their union became one of the most photographed of the 1950s. Curtis and Lee were the embodiment of the American dream: beautiful, successful and in love. Together they starred in five films, including Houdini, and raised two daughters, Kelly and future Halloween star Jamie Lee Curtis.
However, behind the façade of perfect photos, there were cracks. Curtis later admitted that fame and internal problems put pressure on the relationship. In 1962, while Lee was filming The Manchurian Candidate, Curtis filed for divorce after falling in love with 17-year-old German actress Christina Kaufmann. This was a huge blow for Janet, but like a professional, she didn't let the drama drag on.
Just one day after the divorce from Curtis was finalized, in September 1962, Lee married for the fourth time. Her chosen one was stockbroker Robert Brandt. If previous husbands were part of the entertainment industry, then Brandt brought stability to the actress’s life, which she so lacked.
This “final take” turned out to be the most successful. Robert Brandt became Janet's supporter and stepfather to her daughters. The couple were married for 42 years, until the actress’s death in October 2004.
Jamie Lee Curtis, recalling her mother’s story, noted that, despite numerous divorces in the family, the example of Janet’s last marriage taught her that true love can be found if you don’t stop looking. Ultimately, Janet Leigh's main role in life was played not under the spotlight, but in a cozy home with a man who had nothing to do with Hollywood.
