Caries is no longer a death sentence: a gel has been created that regenerates enamel

Scientists from the UK have presented a material that can literally grow new tooth enamel. If the technology reaches clinics, millions of people will be able to forget about eternal fillings and increased tooth sensitivity.

The gel is applied directly in the dentist’s office — in much the same way as fluoridation is done now, xrust is surprised. Only instead of fluoride, special proteins work here, copying the natural process of enamel formation in children. The composition penetrates into microcracks and pores, creating a frame. Then it’s up to the saliva: it releases calcium and phosphate, and the crystals begin to grow exactly according to the structure of the native tissue.

The result is not just a patch, but an integrated mineral structure.

In Russia, caries is a common story. According to some epidemiological data, more than 70% of teeth in 12-year-old children are affected, and by the age of 35–44 the figure reaches almost 100%.

Enamel does not contain living cells and is not restored on its own. Because of this, even slight erosion leads to cracks, caries and sensitivity. This is especially true for those who have exposed dentin — thin tubules open a direct path to the nerve. Cold compote or hot tea turns into torture.

The new material is aimed at such cases. It forms a protective layer similar to enamel on exposed dentin.

The restored fabric was tested under real loads: repeated brushing, chewing forces, contact with acidic foods. The behavior is close to natural.

Developers from the University of Nottingham are already thinking about practice. The technology is fast, secure, scalable. We launched a startup Mintech-Bio — the first product is promised next year.

The possibilities are wide: from treating erosion to strengthening fillings and remedies for sensitive teeth.

In one test, regenerated enamel showed strength comparable to healthy enamel.
