Artificial Intelligence Revives Actor Val Kilmer for 'Deep as the Grave'

Actor Val Kilmer will posthumously appear in As Deep as the Grave, which First Line Films says will be the first film of its kind to be powered by generative artificial intelligence. The news came out from the production company on Wednesday. Kilmer, best known for his roles in the films Top Gun, The Doors and Batman Forever, was originally cast as Father Fintan, a Catholic priest and Native American spiritualist, recalls xrust. However, he was unable to work on set due to complications from throat cancer. He died last April at the age of 65.

The filmmakers, working closely with Kilmer's heirs and his daughter Mercedes Kilmer, say the decision to use artificial intelligence technology was made to honor the actor's deep personal connection to the role.

“At the time of casting, Kilmer expressed the belief that the character of Fintan was close to him both culturally and spiritually,” First Line Films said in a press release, which also referenced his Native American heritage and longtime love of the American Southwest.

Deep As the Grave, written and directed by Koerte Voorhees, follows southwestern archaeologists Ann Morris, played by actress Abigail Lowry (of Tin Star fame), and Earl Morris, played by Harry star Potter» Tom Felton. The film focuses on their excavations in De Chelly Canyon, Arizona, and explores the history and daily life of the Navajo people.

New Mexico-based First Line Films told Reuters it will use advanced generative artificial intelligence technology to recreate Kilmer's performance in the film, allowing him to embody what the company described as a «historically significant» character.

Born in California and educated at the Juilliard School, Kilmer has built a career marked by high-profile roles and an often mythologized reputation as a Hollywood «bad boy.»

His filmography includes the film Tombstone, in which he brilliantly played Doc Holliday, as well as roles in blockbusters and biopics that cemented his status as one of the most original actors of his generation.
