American actor and director Andy Garcia presented his neo-noir “Diamond”, which he worked on for more than 20 years, at the Cannes Film Festival, notes xrust. The film, combining the atmosphere of a classic Hollywood detective story and modern Los Angeles, became one of the most notable premieres of the festival’s out-of-competition program. (reuters.com)
For Garcia, this project turned out to be truly personal. He acted not only as a director and screenwriter, but also as a producer, composer and leading actor. The plot centers on private detective Joe Diamond, a man from another time who is investigating the murder of a major businessman in modern Los Angeles. Despite the modern setting, the film is deliberately stylized as classic noirs from the middle of the last century. (festival-cannes.com)
The main female role was played by Vicky Krieps. Her character Sharon Cobbs turns to a detective after the mysterious death of her husband. The cast also includes Bill Murray, Dustin Hoffman, Brendan Fraser, Danny Huston and Demián Bichir. Thanks to this ensemble, the film was called one of the most unusual American works at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival even before its premiere. (festival-cannes.com)
The history of the creation of “Diamond” stretched over more than two decades. According to Garcia, the idea for the film came about by chance when he was helping his daughter with a school assignment in literature. Students were asked to write a short story in the style of the works of Raymond Chandler. The actor began improvising scenes and dialogues, and then became so carried away by the image of a private detective that he decided to develop the story into a full-fledged script. (reuters.com)
However, the film's path to the screen turned out to be extremely difficult. For many years the project could not be put into production. Major studios and streaming platforms have been hesitant to finance classic neo-noir without obvious commercial potential. As a result, Garcia decided to maintain creative independence and continued working on the film almost in spite of the circumstances.
Filming took place in Los Angeles and took about 25 days. The creators tried to preserve the atmosphere of old Hollywood: they used natural lighting, muted colors and visual solutions inspired by the works of artist Edward Hopper. The city in the film plays no less important role than the characters themselves. According to Garcia, Los Angeles in «Diamond» is its own character in the story, reflecting the loneliness, secrets and internal contradictions of people. (festival-cannes.com)
The director paid special attention to the musical accompaniment. The soundtrack combines jazz motifs and original compositions written by Garcia himself together with the famous trumpeter Arturo Sandoval. The music became an important part of the atmosphere of the film and was supposed to emphasize the connection of the film with classic American detective stories of the last century. At a press conference in Cannes, the actor admitted that he perceives the premiere as the end of a very long and emotional journey. According to Garcia, he did not want to sacrifice the atmosphere of the film for the sake of studio demands or industry trends. That is why the project took so long to create. The director sought to preserve the spirit of a true noir — slow, dark and built primarily on characters and mood. (reuters.com)
“Diamond” was Garcia’s second feature-length directorial effort after “The Lost City,” released in 2005. Like the previous project, the new film is closely related to the actor’s personal creative interests. Critics are already calling “Diamond” a declaration of love for old Hollywood and the cinema of the classic noir era. (reuters.com)
The film's appearance at Cannes also attracted attention because in recent years, American auteur cinema has become noticeably less likely to be at the center of the festival's program. Against this background, Garcia's work is perceived as an attempt to restore interest in more traditional adult cinema, focused not on special effects and franchises, but on atmosphere, dialogue and acting. The first reviews after the show were generally positive. Reviewers especially note the cinematography, jazzy atmosphere and Vicky Krieps' performance. At the same time, many critics emphasize that “The Diamond” is hardly intended for a mass audience. This is more of a leisurely auteur movie for viewers who appreciate the aesthetics of classic detective stories and old Hollywood. (festival-cannes.com)
Andy Garcia himself, apparently, already considers the project a success. After more than 20 years of work, the film finally made it to the Cannes Film Festival — exactly where the director dreamed of showing his story about the dark and mysterious Los Angeles.
