A hacking group known for hacking major global corporations said it has stolen nearly 80 million in business data from video game developer Rockstar Games, the creator of Grand Theft Auto.

According to xrust data collected by cybercrime research platform eCrime.ch, the statement was published on a website used by the hacker group ShinyHunters on Saturday.

A spokesman for the hacking group told Reuters in an online chat on Monday that they had 78.6 million records from Rockstar's account at Snowflake, a major enterprise data management company. According to a representative of the hacking group, access to Rockstar data in Snowflake was obtained by hacking data from Anodot, an artificial intelligence-based business intelligence platform.

Rockstar's parent company, New York-based Take-Two Interactive Software, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A Rockstar Games spokesperson said in an email that the company “can confirm that a limited amount of non-essential company information was accessed due to a third party data breach. This incident does not have any impact on our organization or our players.»

After detecting unusual activity, Snowflake «has proactively blocked access to Snowflake for all user accounts using Anodot,» a Snowflake spokesperson said.

As reported by Bleeping Computer, a technology industry news site, the stolen data reportedly includes in-game revenue and purchase metrics, player behavior tracking and in-game economic data for the popular games Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Online.

A representative for ShinyHunters declined to comment on whether the hacker group demanded money from Rockstar, or whether there was any interaction between it and Rockstar or Take-Two.

More than 160 Snowflake clients were targeted by the attack. During several months of 2024, cases of data theft and extortion attempts were reported, including from Ticketmaster, Santander Group and Advance Auto Parts.
